PSV can shock Arsenal despite poor form - Perisic

Arsenal have more than one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals after scoring seven goals in an extraordinary away win at hapless PSV Eindhoven.

The Gunners have struggled for goals in recent weeks - failing to score in three of their last four games - but Mikel Arteta’s side sparked into life in a devastating 7-1 win.

Goals from Jurrien Timber, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri and makeshift striker Mikel Merino put the visitors in a barely believable position before half-time.

Noah Lang pulled one back from the penalty spot, but Arsenal scored just seconds after the restart as Martin Odegaard restored their three-goal cushion.

Leandro Trossard added another two minutes later, with Odegaard notching his second and Riccardo Calafiori rounding off a superb evening for the north Londoners with a seventh.

The Gunners became the first away team in Champions League history to score seven goals in a knockout stage match and next week’s second leg at the Emirates is all but a formality.

Arsenal can start to look forward to the next round, where they will face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. Follow all the Champions League reaction with our live blog below:

Another chance for PSV as the cross comes towards the back post and de Jong forces Raya into saving his header.

The Spaniard collects well from the corner.

It really feels like PSV are just playing for pride now, but there’s a real swagger about Arsenal.

The hosts attack and Lang drives towards the box before firing it an effort that is just off-target.

GOAL! PSV 1-5 Arsenal

GOAL! What!?

Seconds after kick-off and Arsenal have another!

It’s simple too as Trossard picks the ball up on the wing and back heels it into the path of Calafiori.

The Italian plays the one-two pass and Trossard has broken free in the box, and despite the angle being tight, he races towards goal and squeezes a lovely chip past Benitez for 5-1!

GOAL! And that could be that!

It’s more good work from Nwaneri, who picks the ball up on the right and uses the stepover to work space for the cross.

The ‘keeper can only palm it out back into the box and Odegaard is there to fire it in low pas the bodies in the area.

KICK-OFF! PSV 1-3 Arsenal

The hosts get the second half started, and they’ve made a change too.

Adamo Nagalo has come on at centre-back for Ryan Flamingo.

HALF-TIME! PSV 1-3 Arsenal

Both teams are coming back onto the pitch now, so we’ll be back underway soon.

HALF-TIME! PSV 1-3 Arsenal

A brilliant half for the neutral in the Netherlands, with Arsenal dominant and boasting the lead to show it.

All three goals involved at least one bit of great skill from an Arsenal player, even if the third was fortunate. Lovely play from Trossard, Nwaneri and Rice at times.

It’s irritating for the visitors that Partey’s needless foul has allowed PSV a route into the game, but they’ll be confident of scoring more in the second half.

HALF-TIME! PSV 1-3 Arsenal

Not a lot of urgency from either side in the last couple of minutes and the referee brings the first half to an end in Eindhoven.

A brilliant first half that was almost the perfect opening period for Arsenal, though PSV have found a way back into it courtesy of a silly Partey foul and well-taken Lang penalty.

Plenty of highlights from this one, but you’d expect Arsenal to try and close out the half from here. On another day it could be 3-2 to PSV right now!

The hosts win a free-kick near halfway, but it comes to nothing.
