Conte: "We are doing a good job" in UCL race

Harry Kane struck twice as Tottenham thrashed 10-man Arsenal 3-0 following Rob Holding’s red card to boost their hopes of a top-four finish.

Antonio Conte’s side have now closed the gap on the Gunners in the Premier League to just a point with two games remaining.

Cedric Soares’ clumsy challenge on Son Heung-min handed Spurs an early gift in the shape of a penalty, with Kane calmly dispatching it into the bottom right corner.

And Holding’s elbow to Son earned him a second yellow and an early bath, with Rodrigo Bentancur’s flick-on at a corner moments later allowing Kane to crouch low and head in a second.

Kane turned provider after the restart, dragging Gabriel Magalhaes inside the box with Son stabbing home the loose ball to pull within one of Mohamed Salah in the race for the golden boot.

How Mikel Arteta sparked Arsenal’s charge towards top four

Arsenal are on the cusp of ending a five-year wait for Champions League football as their victory over Leeds solidified their place in the Premier League top four.

The Gunners will return to Europe’s elite competition if they win at Tottenham on Thursday night as Mikel Arteta continues to turn around a season that began in the worst possible way.

Arsenal were rock bottom of the Premier League, without a point or a goal, heading into the September international break but are now on the verge of a top-four finish.

Here, we look at just how Arteta has managed to instigate such a recovery.

Son Heung-min is only the second Tottenham player to score 20 Premier League goals in a season without any of them being penalties, emulating Gareth Bale in 2012-13 (21).

He has both scored (12) and been involved in (17) more top-flight goals in 2022 than any other player and after failing to score or assist in any of his first nine league games against Arsenal, Son has three goals and two assists in his last four North London derby appearances.

Victory for Arsenal would guarantee them their highest Premier League finish since the 2015-16 campaign when they finished second. It would also be the first time since then that they have finished above Spurs.

The Gunners have registered four consecutive league wins while conceding at least once in every game for the first time since a run of five from February to March 2012.

The biggest north London derby in a decade will decide Arsenal and Tottenham’s future

In the build-up to Thursday, Antonio Conte has been “super animated”, seeking to ensure his players are ready to rampage into this one. He has used a few little techniques for motivation, and the suspension of this game in January has been mentioned, as has the home support.

This is what Conte is best at. Tottenham’s performance in big games has been the most positive aspect of his brief time in charge so far, and is one major reason he has them in contention for the top four. Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have improved in big games themselves, but their season has mostly been about winning the games they should – which is why they don’t absolutely have to win this one.

That is Spurs’ necessity, but it’s a difficult balance to strike. “Balance” is itself a word that has returned to the discussion around the north London derby, as both clubs face up to the fixture’s biggest game in around a decade.

After a run of four straight league victories, Tottenham have won just one of their last four but have drawn two of the other three games.

However, Spurs have won four of their last five home league games, scoring at least three goals in each of those victories.

Tottenham vs Arsenal team changes

Antonio Conte makes just one change to the Tottenham team that lined-up against Liverpool last time out. Davinson Sanchez comes in to replace Cristian Romero.

Mikel Arteta names an unchanged team from the one that defeated Leeds 2-1. Bukayo Saka is fit enough to start but Ben White only makes the bench.

More from Arteta

In his pre-match press conference Mikel Arteta was asked whether the pressure of the derby is different as a manager than it was as a player and he replied:

“The winning factor is always the best feeling! It’s different obviously as a player and manager, but in every occassion, it’s not just about winning, it’s about how you win those matches and the experience that you go through throughout the 90 minutes, especially when you play at home in front of your crowd.”

He also spoke about the prospect of managing the Gunners in front of a packed crowd at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium saying:

“It’s different because the history of north London, we all know about it, and what it means to our fans. After that it’s a football pitch with a lot of noise and a crowd that will be excited to support their team, and we’ll have our fans as well for sure one hundred percent behind the team.”
