Tottenham coasted to a comfortable 4-1 win over Newcastle as Ange Postecoglou’s side ended their five-match winless run.

Goals from Destiny Udogie and Richarlison saw the home side ahead at the break after a relentless display against the injury-ravaged visitors.

Richarlison added a third after the break before Son Heung-Min got in the act from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Martin Dubravka.

Joelinton’s injury-time finish secured a consolation goal for Eddie Howe’s side who remain seventh after two back-to-back defeats.

Son Heung-min re-ignites Tottenham’s best form as Newcastle’s injury crisis finally catches up with them

Tottenham’s five-match run without victory came to an end with a clinical performance in a dominant win over a ragged and injury-plagued Newcastle.

Spurs supporters’ agonising wait to celebrate was finally over, after a winless November, goals from Destiny Udogie, Son Heung-min and two from Richarlison embodied a controlled game and a deserved three points.

Richarlison might have previously struggled for consistency at Tottenham, with just five goals in his last 48 matches, but was on target twice to see Spurs secure a much-needed victory.

It did not look the same Newcastle who put Paris Saint Germain to the test and were disappointed to be leaving France with only a point, nor the one who beat Manchester United at the start of the month – but more problematically though, it was. The Magpies’ injury crisis has not allowed for any significant deviation from the starting XI who have played the last four games, and the last two matches have shown it is just too much for the severely injury-depleted squad.

That’s all for today

A dominant win for Spurs to end this weekend of Premier League football. Their fans will be happy and will now eye up back-to-back wins when they travel to take on Nottingham Forest next Friday.

There’s no rest fro Newcastle, mind, who must regroup and prepare to host Milan in a huge must-win Champions League group-stage finale.

We’ll see you then...bye for now!

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe talking to Sky Sports: “We had our moments - especially at the beginning of the second half - and the lads gave everything. We’re just without the resources to give more. It is difficult because we play on Wednesday but this is what we wanted. We hoped to have the squad to cope with that but we’ve had worse injuries than any team that I can remember.

“We have light at the end of the tunnel. Callum [Wilson] and [Sean] Longstaff are two huge players for us. We have to be positive, take the pain and come fighting.

“You have to critique like you would normally; we weren’t in rhythm around the box and lacked conviction. We didn’t defend the goals well enough. The moments were there, we had chances. There is always more, you can push yourself even when you’re tired.”

An injury-plagued Newcastle squad have now lost back-to-back games in convincing fashion. In fact, it’s the first time since November 2017 that they’ve lost successive league games by more than three goals.

They’ve also now lost more league matches this season (6) than they lost in the entirety of 2022-23 (5).

They’ve still got a hard midweek game against Milan and a weekend clash against the in-form Fulham to come...

More from Postecoglou: “We are getting players back; you can see Newcastle are running on fumes. We’ve gone through that and hopefully, we are coming out the other side.

“Both boxes we were a lot better and more solid. Having Romero back helped with that. A lot of those problems sought themselves when we have the personnel back.

On ending the poor run of form: “We have had to battle away and come January we’ll get players back. That’s part of the challenge with the Premier League - it’s unrelenting; the other teams aren’t going to feel sorry for you.

“When you go through these periods it’s about how you go through them and how you react to them. To be honest, even though the results haven’t been there, I’ve probably been a bit harsh on the lads. We’ve been in just about every game we’ve played and when everyone starts to come back it does give you strength.”

Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports after the game: “I can’t fault the lads. They put in a massive effort today. We were brighter in the front third and a lot more aware of the opportunities that were around. I thought Sonny [Son Heung-min] was excellent and that sort of thing feeds off to the other guys - they see his authority in that area and take a lead from that.

“You rely on your leaders to take initiative; we could have had more goals but our attacking play was as good as it has been for a while.”

More from Wilson on the altercation with Vicario after full-time: “There is a way to win. I think we saw it in the week when Everton were winning and Pickford was messing around. The keeper started pulling faces and messing around and it’s just a lack of respect, I thought. But, I said my piece, we’re grown men, we move on.”

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson speaking to Sky Sports after the game: “The players that have been starting the last five or six games have had a lot asked of them. We are playing a top side; it felt like a game too many.

“When you’re in games like today, the first goal can give you something to hold on to, to build momentum. With what has happened in the last two away games, maybe there is something in the back of our minds. There are no excuses, it wasn’t good enough and we’ll make sure we are right for the midweek game.

“Tottenham are a good side; they scored a good first goal. We just couldn’t find the breakthrough and when they get a second and third it is a long way back.”

On getting back on the pitch: “I’ve been champing at the bit and working hard in the gym. When the lads are travelling from game to game you see how much demand is being put on them and you just want to get back and help out. It was nice to be back out there today - unfortunately didn’t get back on the score sheet but helped Joelinton so I guess that was a positive in a disappointing afternoon.”

More from Son: “Trippier is one of my closest friends and we had a fantastic time here but when you play against each other there are no friends so I tried to beat him. He’s an amazing defender, it was a hard time for me.

“But whatever position the team needs I’m always ready and will do my best.”

On taking the first penalty since Kane’s departure: “Shall we call Harry [Kane] back? No, I practiced all the time even when Harry was here and I learned from Harry as well. It was our first penalty decision and I hope we can get a few more.”

Spurs captain Son speaking to Sky Sports after the game: “To bounce back like that is very important. We don’t want to make more mistakes like we have for a couple of weeks. I thought today was a fantastic performance and I hope we can continue to perform like this and stay humble.

“I said after the West Ham game we have to be more ruthless when we go in their box. Today we were ruthless, we were creating chances. You have to be clinical and we did a fantastic job. To beat Newcastle is not easy, they are a strong side.”

On maintaining high standards: “Of course that’s important. We are playing in the Premier League and have to demand a lot from each other. The amazing teams keep going no matter how many wins they get and I think that should be a habit for us.”
