Arsenal transfer news: Arsene Wenger targets new defender after Per Mertesacker suffers long-term injury

The Frenchman has made it clear that the club will need to bring in defensive cover ahead the new season

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club are in the market for a new central defender.

Per Mertesacker picked up a knee injury in Friday’s pre-season draw with Lens which is expected to keep him out of the game for "months".

Neither Gabriel nor Laurent Koscielny have travelled to America – the Brazilian is currently suffering from illness while the Frenchman is on an extended break following Euro 2016 – which has left Arsenal short of options at the back.

New-signing Rob Holding is expected to be thrown straight into action as he steps in for the missing the centre-backs.

Wenger confirmed the news on Arsenal’s official website ahead of his side’s clash with the MLS All-Stars on Thursday.

“We have bad news on Per Mertesacker," Wenger said.

"He played in Lens on Friday night, he finished the game and had a little pain on his knee. We found out the next day that it was much more serious than expected.

"He had surgery yesterday in Germany. It all went well. I know you will ask me for how long he will be out. I don't know that, it's months, but I don't know how long he will be out for."

Arsenal could be the club to offer him that as Arsene Wenger continues to search for a striker having been snubbed by Leicester’s Jamie Vardy. Ray Parlour urged his former club to sign the forward, arguing that the side needs “someone of the calibre of a Sergio Aguero or a Luis Suarez.” The Emirates hierarchy is reportedly keen on bringing in him but Everton’s £50m price-tag could prove to be a sticking point.

Whether Gunners decide to make a formal bid for the 25-year-old remains to be seen but there’s no doubting the midfield dynamo would slot nicely into the Arsenal outfit.

The former Real Madrid striker has been repeatedly linked with a move to north London but the transfer has failed to materialise in the past. In an encouraging turn of events for fans, Higuain’s agent has allegedly made contact with Arsenal who are potentially interested in trying again to bring the Argentinian to the Emirates. Higuain scored 36 Serie A goals in 35 appearances for Napoli last season, breaking a league record in the process. The striker would be the perfect addition to Arsenal’s front-line.

Questionable this one, admittedly, but there have been some whispers on the grape vine. The Arsenal boss was spotted chatting to the Frenchman during Sunday night’s final but, given the context, it’s hard to imagine Wenger was attempting to persuade the player to move to Arsenal. The chances of Griezmann making the switch are, well, pretty slim. The Atletico Madrid player is committed to the club until 2021 and rumours suggest he has a release clause set at €100m. There’s no harm in dreaming, though.

"We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience," Wenger said.

"We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well. With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in."

Unsurprisingly, Wenger refused to offer up any suggestions of who he would be tempted to bring to the Emirates.
