Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United: Bayern Munich confirm deal agreed over move for Germany midfielder

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed.

Reports emerged on Friday night that United had launched an official move for the Germany international, and the Bundesliga champions have wasted little time to confirm that a fee, believed to be £15m, has been agreed between the two clubs after the club's CEO Rummenigge revealed the agreement in Germany.

United will now discuss personal terms with Schweinsteiger ahead of what would be a serious message to their Premier League rivals that United mean business this season.

At a press conference to unveil new signings Douglas Costa and Joshua Kimmich, Rummenigge said: "My colleagues at Manchester United have been in touch. We've reached an agreement over a transfer.

"Bastian wants to do something new at the end of his career. He asked that we meet his wishes.

"We tried to convince him to stay with Bayern Munich. But I also understand that a player who has spent 17 years at Bayern Munich, at the end of his career still wants to gain a new experience."

"He has done great things here, he has won everything," he said. "I suggest to him that we will give him a great farewell match in Munich when he finishes his career, whenever that will be. And when he stops, we will talk about whether there is a second career for him here at Bayern."

United quickly issued a statement on their website to confirm that the deal was in place.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Bayern Munich to sign midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, subject to a medical and personal terms," the statement read.

"A further announcement will be made when the process is complete."

World Cup winner Schweinsteiger is out of contract next summer and has elected not to renew his deal, with the club set to sell the 30-year-old central midfielder instead of lose him on a free transfer in a years’ time.

With United eager to add to their squad following the signing of Memphis Depay, they have launched a move for the Bayern stalwart and are willing to give Schweinsteiger a significant pay rise in order to convince him to follow Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford.

Van Gaal worked with Schweinsteiger during his time as Bayern manager, and it’s believed that he has personally persuaded the midfielder to join his United squad in a statement of intent that the club’s title challenge this season is a realistic one.

Having made his Bayern debut in 2002, Schweinsteiger has racked up an incredible 536 appearances for the Bavarian club, while collecting 111 caps for Germany that included the successful 2014 World Cup campaign.
