David De Gea to Real Madrid: Iker Casillas throws Manchester United goalkeeper's transfer in to doubt as he claims he'll 'fight until the end'

Casillas took to Facebook to suggest that he will not leave Real Madrid without fighting for his place

Iker Casillas has cast doubt over the transfer of David De Gea from Manchester United after admitting he will fight for his future at Real Madrid.

The Independent revealed on Tuesday that Real were hoping a move to Tottenham Hotspur would materialise for their legendary goalkeeper, who has fallen out of favour with the fans and is seen as replaceable in the eyes of new manager Rafael Benitez.

That would pave the way for Real to launch a bid for De Gea, with the expectation that they could launch an opening offer in the region of £13m, though would likely increase their bid towards the £25m mark. United are determined to hold out for a fee closer to £35m, but the two clubs are willing to negotiate and a move appeared to a formality.

However, De Gea has reservations about moving to the Santiago Bernabeu if he is to play second fiddle to Casillas, and it was reported that the exit of Casillas would convince De Gea that he is Benitez’s No 1 goalkeeeper this season.

Dropping a hint to his fans on Facebook, Casillas posted: “After 25 years at Real Madrid, what I learned the first day is still used - if you want to win, fight until the end.”

The 34-year-old is facing an uncertain future, although it is nothing he hasn’t experienced before given that he was dropped by former manager Jose Mourinho in favour of Diego Lopez when the pair fell out before Mourinho’s exit.

However, Spurs have shown no sign of interest in Casillas this summer, with a move for the Spaniard dependent on United approaching the North London club about a move for Hugo Lloris. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has remained adamant that Lloris is going nowhere this summer, and the minimal interest in Casillas appears to show that the club will stand by Levy’s word.

De Gea meanwhile is entering the final year on his contract, having refused to sign a new deal offered by United worth a reported £200,000-a-week deal. The club are relaxed over his future and believe that he will sign a new contract in the coming season, although the prospect of the 24-year-old leaving on a free transfer would begin to grow more realistic as every day passes.
