Brooks Koepka held off the challenge of Viktor Hovland and the surging Scottie Scheffler to win his third US PGA Championship title and fifth major.

Koepka, who felt he had "choked" when holding the 54-hole lead at the Masters last month, kept his cool to shoot a final-round 66 at Oak Hill Country Club.

Hovland kept the pressure on and reduced Koepka’s lead to one with five holes to play - but the Norwegian’s chances evaporated with a double bogey at the 16th.

Scheffler’s fine 65 saw the American get to within two of Koepka, who held on to win his first major since his last PGA Championship in 2019.

The highlight of the day came from club professional Michael Block, the 46-year-old making a hole-in-one on the 15th as he played the final round alongside Rory McIlroy, who finished in a tie for seventh place.

Koepka birdies to lead by two

Koepka -8 (12), Hovland -6 (12)

Koepka hasn’t made a par in his last five holes but he has yet another birdie at the 12th. It’s a big putt from the off the green and it was never going anywhere else.

Hovland has a chance to respond...but it’s a tame effort from the Norwegian and it misses comfortably.

The American restores his two-shot lead.

Scheffler not out of it

Scheffler -5 (13), Rose -1 (13)

Scottie Scheffler inserts himself into the picture all of a sudden. A dart into the 13th green leaves him a simple birdie putt and even with his putting woes this week, the American knocks it in. He’s back within two of the lead.

Rose makes par to remain at one under.

Bogeys for Conners and DeChambeau

Conners -2 (12), DeChambeau -2 (12)

Both Conners and DeChambeau make a meal of the relatively enticing and short 12th. Bogey fives for the pair and they are now five off the lead. That feels fatal for their tournament hopes.

Koepka makes bogey, lead back to one

Koepka -7 (11), Hovland -6 (11)

Koepka muscles his ball out of the sand from the difficult lie to about 12 feet. He gives it a good run...but it catches the left edge and passes by. A bogey for the leader right after his birdie the hole earlier.

Hovland can’t make his long-range birdie effort but settles for a par and is now just one back.

Birdie for McIlroy

McIlroy -3 (13), Block +2 (13)

Rory makes use of the par-five well and his third shot with the wedge gives him a good look for birdie. He converts and moves to three under but he’s fast running out of holes.

Block makes par and remains at two over.

Trouble off the tee for Koepka

Koepka -8 (10), Hovland -6 (10)

Fresh off the birdie, Koepka takes aim at the par-three 11th but it’s just not enough and plugs in the sand. That’s a nasty lie up against the lip of the bunker - less than ideal for the leader.

Hovland follows him but plays safely to the middle of the green.

Cam Davis rounds up

Davis -3 (65)

The Australian is centimetres away from making yet another birdie on the last but it falls just short. Still, a remarkable round from the big-hitter who sits inside the top five as things stand.

Koepka birdies to lead by two

Koepka -8 (10), Hovland -6 (10)

This 10th has been a testing hole for many so far and it’s full of intrigue here. Koepka stuffs one in close and he’s got just under 8 feet for his birdie...which he makes. That’s his first birdie since the fourth and should calm some of the nerves that perhaps were creeping in.

Hovland has a longer-range effort but he races it by and there is work to do to ensure a par. Right in the middle of the cup - a good save from Hovland but he’s now two back.

Back-to-back bogeys for Rose

Scheffler -4 (11), Rose -1 (11)

It’s slowly unravelling for Rose around the turn. His tee shot into the par-three 11th is way right and the Englishman can only give himself an outside look at par after his chip-on. One over for the day now and back to one under par. Scheffler makes par to remain at four under.

Bogey for DeChambeau

Conners -3 (10), DeChambeau -3 (10)

Bryson makes an unforced error and flies the green with his second. He’s unable to get up and down and he drops back into the chasing back at three under alongside his playing partner Conners who makes par.
