Formula One star Niki Lauda dies aged 70

Lewis Hamilton took his fourth victory of the season and his third on the streets of Monaco after a thrilling battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, extending his championship lead over Valtteri Bottas in the process.

Despite leading from pole position, an early safety car caused by Charles Leclerc's puncture leaving debris across the track after he hit the wall changed the complexion of the race, with Hamilton needing to nurse his tyres to the end against the attacking Verstappen - the Red Bull youngster needing to pass the leader and build a gap after receiving a five-second penalty for hitting Bottas in the pits.

But Hamilton was able to see the victory home, even after contact with Hamilton two laps from the finish, to take his fourth victory of the season. As a result of Verstappen's penalty, Sebastian Vettel finished second with Bottas third. Re-live the drama below.

Lewis Hamilton:

"That was definitely probably the hardest race of my career. 

"I know that Nicki was looking down today and I know that he'll be proud.

"We truly miss him.

"I've not driven on truly empty tyres since Shanghai 2007 when McLaren left me out. A great crowd and I hope it wasn't boring.

"It was. I was never going to come in. A few years ago I was in the lead and I came in and lost the race. I learned the hard way. I was either going to crash or finish, you could see how much understeer I had and ultimately it was the wrong tyre. But dude, what this team has done in these first six races is incredible.

"It was close. it was a bit of a late dive but luckily I saw him last minute and I don't think his front wing was in front of my rear wheel so I just carried on."

Sebastian Vettel:

Lewis and Max were in a worse position with graining but mine weren't. They just weren't getting hot.

"We've got a lot of work to do, but today is obviously about the winner so congrats Lewis but it's also about Nicki. He would be happy today and he will never leave us. He is an icon and my thoughts are with his family and with him."

Valtteri Bottas:

"Disappointing weekend for me because the speed was really there. I felt good in the car. We had to pit the same time as Lewis so I got stuck behind the car and then I got hit by Max and got a puncture, and got stuck behind him. A bit of a Sunday drive."
