The first day of the Isle of Man TT combined entertainment and tragedy as Peter Hickman and Lee Johnston took victories overshadowed by a rider's death.

The opening RST Superbike race was red flagged due to an accident, which claimed the life of rider Daley Mathison. Race leaders Hickman and Dean Harrison had embarked on their third of four laps when the red flags were brought out due to a crash at Snugborough, on the run towards Union Mills early in the lap, which led to the standings at the end of lap two being used to determine the results and award Hickman his third TT victory. It has since been confirmed by Mathison's wife that he died following the accident.

The second race of the day saw the Birchall brothers, Ben and Tom, power to victory with a new race record in the Locate.IM Sider Race 1, and in the final race of the day Johnston clinched his first victory at the TT in the Monster Energy Supersport Race One ahead of James Hillier and Hickman. Race-winner Lee Johnston:

"I'm going to cry like a girl. I didn't know what to do because I was so preparing myself for a pit stop, and then I saw a red light and the chequered flag and I didn't know what to do. 

"This place is so weird, I didn't feel like I've done anything different and then I've won it. I thought if I could keep Pete in sight I could win it."

Johnston:

"You know when you're leading you don't want to put your hand up and point it out. I could see the rain on my screen and I didn't know if it was the overflow bottle leaking but I put it up and I could see my visor. 

"I though I'm not going to lose this by not being brave enough because of a bit of rain.

"This means so much to me, with Ashcourt Racing and everyone else around me.

"It's something I've always wanted to do and there's one person who I wanted here to see it and sadly he's not, but hopefully he's looking down."

Hillier:

"On the start line I felt pretty chilled out. I spent the afternoon lying in bed resting. It was a weird one, I didn't expect to be battling with Lee - no offence to him - but you like to know who you're battling against. 

"The rain was sketchy because you don't know how long it's been raining, and there's no flags, so it's the right call to end it.

"It's been a weird day, you just want to get racing in, and I'm made up for Lee."

Hickman:

"That lap through Kickmichael I caught McGuinness into it and he was being cautious and I thought 'why you being cautious?' and then realised it's raining. I actually checked my windscreen to see if it actually was raining and it was, but then it stopped and I got my head down but definintely lost three or four seconds. It's another nearly for the small bike! But I'm a big bike rider, not a small bike rider so hey-ho."

That's all for our coverage of the opening day of racing at the Isle of Man, one that has been full of action, emotion and tragedy.

The weather forecast looks bleak for tomorrow to say the least, and with the schedule set to be announced for the rescheduled Superstock TT, it's highly unlikely we'll get any running tomorrow even if organisers try to do so. But with a busy schedule on Wednesday and the weather looking significantly better for the rest of the week, we should get all six remaining races in this week, ending with the Senior TT on Friday.
