Wales continued their winning start to the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, producing another fine fightback to snatch a late victory against Scotland in Cardiff.

In front of a record crowd for a women’s international in Wales, replacement scrum-half Ffion Lewis capitalised on a break from the outstanding Alisha Butchers to cross for the winning try less than five minutes from time.

Scotland had dominated the first half, but were again guilty of failing to convert their territory and possession into points, leading only 14-7 at the interval.

Rhona Lloyd’s second score soon after the restart had appeared to set the visitors up for a second half surge, but the Welsh bench again made a telling impact.

Tries from Sioned Harries and Kelsey Jones levelled proceedings, before Butchers’ burst teed up Lewis to secure a second successive bonus point victory and a first home Six Nations win since 2019.

Wales 24-19 Scotland, 80 minutes

It’s a single hand extended by the Welsh captain as Helen Nelson passed for Jade Konkel, who had a gap in front of her. This will surely be a penalty - but will it be more? TMO Chris Assmus and referee Joy Neville will have a chat.

Wales so far holding firm. Megan Gaffney is grabbed. Lana Skeldon snared.

Now then! Is that a deliberate knock-on from Siwan Lillicrap? I think that might be as she shot out of the line?

A Welsh kick flies out on the full! A chance for Scotland in Welsh territory.

The lineout just about works to Emma Wassell. This will surely be the final shot for the visitors, who have brought on Hannah Smith in the centres.

TRY! WALES 24-19 Scotland (Ffion Lewis try, 76 minutes)

A brilliant burst from Alisha Butchers and Ffion Lewis is away!

It’s sharp from Lewis to spark it, attacking the blindside as Scotland assemble their defence to the open, but this is all about Butchers’ open-field skill. She collects at first receiver and recognises a tiring Lana Skeldon in front of her. As she has done all season for Bristol, the back-row squares up the defender, jabbing off the right foot and scurrying between Skeldon and the guard defender.

She needs support, which is provided in a timely manner by Lewis, who takes the pass and out-kicks the chasing Scottish defence to the line. Is that the winning score? Elinor Snowsill can’t convert.

Blimey is that Welsh maul working now. Scottish bodies fall from it like flies off the windscreen and Kelsey Jones rumbles onwards further.

The scrum that follows ends almost inevitably in a Welsh penalty. They exit their own 22 but make little more progress. That’s the end of Leah Bartlett’s time on the naughty step. She returns alongside her skipper Rachel Malcolm.

An ugly lineout lift and throw, but Scotland eventually connect. Stopping Jade Konkel requires two defenders, but Emma Wassell is then stood up, and held up - brilliant from Siwan Lillicrap and Sioned Harries, two of Wales’ most experienced, and perhaps more pertinently physical, players.

Bethan Lewis enters at the side of an embryonic maul. Penalty against Wales.

Into the corner.

Wales 19-19 Scotland, 70 minutes

A final front row change for Wales with Cara Hope on in the place of Gwenllian Pyrs. Christine Belisle receives some treatment, which is a worry for Scotland with one prop already in the sin bin, but the Loughborough tighthead will be ok to continue.

The Welsh lineout throw drifts off-line. Scotland have a scrum or lineout option - Lana Skeldon will, of course, be asked to throw.

Scottish possession in the Welsh half. They work hands to the left and Shona Campbell asks Megan Gaffney to dart to her inside, but Wales cover across nicely on the drift and force Scotland over the touchline.
