The women’s singles quarter-finals take centre stage on Tuesday

Wimbledon Championships in numbers

The women’s singles take centre stage at Wimbledon on Tuesday as we approach the business end of the third Grand Slam of the season.

An all-American clash gets us underway on Centre Court, as Alison Riske takes on Serena Williams, before home hope Johanna Konta plays Barbora Strycova.

On Court No.1, Simona Halep — who knocked out 15-year-old sensation Coco Gauff on Monday — plays Zhang Shuai for a place in the semi-finals. Then, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina takes on Karolina Muchova.

There will also be plenty of doubles action, with Andy Murray and Serena Williams in action later in the day.

Andy Murray and Serena Williams, speaking in their post-match press conference:

Murray in response to when he could return to singles, potentially US Open:

"I think it's pretty unlikely in terms of timings. I spoke to my team and I need to get myself stronger. The amount of work I need to do on and off court to get strong enough to play best-of-5 is far away still unfortunately. I need to look long-term at this, and to give it the best chance. I don't know exactly, you guys want a timeframe and i can't give you one because i don't know how i'm going to be physically. 

Could they team up again in the future?

AM: "I don't know about that. It's possible - it's been fun being on the court with Serena. I want to be competitive, play well, try to win, I don't think that's changed."

On his return generally:

AM: "When I got my hip injury I was no.1 in the world, and then i couldn't do day to day things. Tennis became painful, and i wasn't enjoying going out for a walk, dinner, it was uncomfortable. The most important thing was to be healthy for someone who's 32. 

On how mixed is helping his recovery:

AM: "Playing matches is always good. Break points i haven't played that well so far, but i'll continue to improve with matches. Hopefully stay on the match court.

On their relationship on court:

AM: "Few jokes tonight, but can't say them here! Today felt more relaxed then the first match, because we don't know each other very well. 

On more mixed style events in the future:

SW: "it's hard because of schedules and singles, it worked out for me because i wanted some matchplay and so did Andy.

Serena, on how many return winners she hit:

"Once in a lifetime, i'll never do that again!

On playing the US Hard court swing:

AM: "I don't know if I want to go to the states to play doubles, I'm not sure yet. will decide after tournament is done.
