Five of Conor McGregor's best UFC fights

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier failed to settle their rivalry tonight after a dramatic clash in the main event of UFC 264.

The latest bout marked their third meeting, with McGregor having knocked out Poirier in the first round when they fought at featherweight in 2014, before the American exacted his revenge this January by handing the Irishman the first KO loss of his career. That lightweight contest in Abu Dhabi ended in the second round, with many pundits predicting another early finish as the pair go head-to-head in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There was in fact an early finish, but not an expected one. The trilogy came to a close after McGregor lost to Poirier via doctor stoppage, with the Irishman unable to continue after sustaining an ankle injury at the end of the first round.

McGregor has just one win in the last four-and-a-half years – a 40-second demolition of Donald Cerrone in January 2020 – while Poirier now has eight victories and one defeat in that same period of time. The ‘Diamond’ has established himself as the No 1 lightweight contender in the UFC, and – having previously held interim gold – could have fought for the vacant undisputed title at 155lbs this spring. Instead, Poirier opted for a money fight with McGregor.

“Lower tibia. The shin, I guess,” White said. “I don’t know how the f*ck they figured that out that quick.”

“It’s all about timing, what’s going on, what’s happens since then. Conor goes into surgery tomorrow [Sunday]. We don’t know long how he’s going to be out. How much his rehab and therapy he’s going to need.”

Conor McGregor ‘finished’ in the UFC, says Bisping

Conor McGregor’s career is “finished” following his defeat to Dustin Poirier and after suffering a suspected broken leg on Saturday night, according to former UFC fighter and pundit Michael Bisping.

“He was also finished in three of those last four fights,” Bisping said on ESPN. “He had an amazing career and was a two weight division champion. It was something that was never done before. But what we’re seeing right now, that is nothing in any shape or form that resembles the Conor we saw in 2014.

“That guy that took over the sport, he’s gone. He’s dead. Like it or not, he was finished tonight. [Poirier] checked a leg kick, Conor’s leg fractured and, besides that, he was getting dominated for the entire round. He was take down, he didn’t have very good defence on the floor. He ate a lot of elbows.

“Listen, the man has done a lot of amazing things in the sport, but his time in the sun is over.”

Dustin Poirier identifies where Conor McGregor suffered leg injury

Dustin Poirier has now tasted victory against Conor McGregor for the second time this year, but not in the way he would have liked after the Irishman broke his leg during their UFC 264 main event clash.

The American was leading on the judges scorecards when the injury occurred near the end of the first round.

“He fractured it on one of the checks, at the beginning of the fight. And it broke on the punch [at the end of the round] for sure, yeah,” Poirier said post-fight.

“When I pointed at him, at the start of the fight, after I checked a good kick. I bet that’s when it cracked. I felt something.”

“It was probably cracked and then the twist of the punch finished it.”

Conor McGregor vows “this is not over” after Dustin Poirier defeat

Conor McGregor gave an emotional post-fight interview moments after suffering a serious leg injury and losing his trilogy fight to Dustin Poirier in Las Vegas.

“This is not over! If I have to take this outside with him it’s on outside I don’t give a b*******.”

When asked to explain what happened to cause the injury, the former two-weight champion added: “Just, the thing had separated and I bleedin’ landed on the wonky leg, like Anderson Silva that time. Something similar to that. It’s a f***ing mad old business. F*** sake!
