When summer arrives in the Austrian Tirol, time takes on a whole new dimension. In the mountain paradise of Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, once the speedy cable set has whizzed you to the top, it's up to you to decide on your own pace on the 150 or so hiking trails that wind through fragrant alpine meadows and past waterfalls and sparkling lakes.

With a hiking level for every member of the family – from the pushchair-friendly trail at Mitteregg to adventurous hikes around the Seeben waterfall – everyone can get close to nature.

You’ll also discover the charms – and delicious cuisine – of the seven pretty villages that make up this picturesque destination: Ehrwald, Lermoos, Berwang, Bichlbach, Biberwier, Heiterwang and Namlos.

Take a ride

If you prefer to explore Tiroler Zugspitz Arena’s mountains and forests on two wheels, you’ve got more than 100 signposted trails to choose from. Challenge yourself on the jumps and obstacles of the freeride trail in Lermoos or take it easy on the gentle paths along Heiterwanger See.

Beautiful Sebensee (U Wiesmeier)

Ride the cable car to the peaks and make your own exhilarating way down. If you need a bit of help on the hills, rent an electric bike and let the battery take some of the strain.

Reach for the top

For anyone in the family who wants to scale new heights, there are a large number of rock-climbing trails in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena to explore – with something for beginners to experts. And if the weather doesn’t behave, then spend the day at the indoor climbing centre in Ehrwald.

Still looking for an adrenaline rush? You don’t have to be a kid to get a thrill from the summertime toboggan run in Biberwier. Hold on tightly as the luge twists along for 1,300m and around 40 curves.

For an unforgettable experience, take the cable car in Lermoos and cast yourself off the mountain in a tandem paraglide ride. You really will feel as if you’re soaring like a bird.

And make the most of an active family holiday in Tiroler Zugspitz Arena with a Z ticket, which gives you free cable car rides, entry to swimming pools and even a descent on a monster scooter in Biberwier.

Regina Poberschnigg, mountain rescuer

“During the daytime, thousands of people come to the Seebensee lake, but for me the best time is in the evening when things are quiet. The light is different and you can smell the mountain pine. As the sun goes down, the mountains are bathed in hues of red and orange. This is the place where I can recharge my batteries and find peace. You don’t have any worries here.”
