OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

A 15-minute walk from Temple Meads Station, Corn Street makes a great base from which to explore the city. The heart of Bristol is fairly compact too so getting around on foot is a doddle. Harbourside is a short walk away so head there for a boat trip to get a sense of Bristol's layout and history. Wapping Wharf has some mouthwatering restaurants - housed in old shipping containers - or head to the Arnolfini arts centre, or We The Curious science centre.

By car: around 1 hour 30 minutes from Exeter, 3 hours from London and 4 hours from York.

By train: trains run to Bristol Temple Meads from Exeter St Davids (1 hour), London Paddington (1 hour 40 minutes) and York (3 hours 50 minutes). The hotel is a 15-minute taxi-ride from the station. Book trains to Bristol Temple Meads station.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

A cool vibe extends throughout the hotel, which is set in a grand Grade II-Listed building. Muted colours contrast with boldly upholstered furnishings and interesting artworks. Elsewhere the Bristol blue glass windows give the restaurant added allure.

THE FACILITIES

The small spa - with treatments by ESPA - is a treat and tucked away in the old bank vaults. There's also a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and very good gym. Service is unobtrusive and efficient.

BED AND BATH

The light-filled rooms come in a neutral colouring, offset by boldly coloured furnishing; beds are super-comfortable and some rooms have free-standing baths. The bathrooms, decked in Italian marble, have baths and rainforest showers.

Room types: Standard Double, Superior, Deluxe rooms, Corner Suite, Suite

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with The White Company toiletries, Nespresso coffee machine, complimentary use of HarSPA, 24-hour room service, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The inviting Jetty restaurant and bar with its distinctive blue-glass windows have bar stools overlooking the kitchen, and tables with aquamarine sofas. The seafood-based menu is a treat and they do a sumptuous afternoon tea too. Breakfasts are particularly good and served on Cornish crockery.

The Jetty: stylish, seafood and steaks, local produce. Open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Dinner mains from £16.

The Gold Bar: quirky, classic cocktails with a modern twist. Open Friday and Saturday 5-10pm. Cocktails starting at £6.95.
