The hotel has a peaceful setting beside a mere, looking across the manicured lawns of pricey private homes on the opposite shore. The area is largely rural, but the M6 and M56 are just a few miles away and it's only about 15 minutes to Manchester Airport. Knutsford, with its smart shops, bars and restaurants, is three miles south and local stately homes and gardens include Tatton, Arley and Dunham Massey.

By car: 4.5 hours (200 miles) from London by car, or 45 minutes (16 miles) from Manchester. Parking is available on site.

By train: the closest station is Knutsford (10-minute drive from the hotel). Warrington, with its direct connections to London and Manchester is 20 minutes away. Book trains to Knutsford.

Most of the old halls that once stood here burned down in 1973, so behind the ivy-clad Victorian façade, the interiors are totally contemporary. In the large open lobby/restaurant, three giant tiered lamps hang from a high metal and glass ceiling; next door, the bar has angular crushed velvet sofas and a backlit onyx counter.

Staff are friendly, polite and helpful. The star on the facilities front is obviously the 18-hole championship golf course, but you'll also find four tennis courts and, hidden away behind the old stable wall, a pool and spa. A choice of event spaces makes it a popular spot for weddings too.

Browns restaurant is a raised area in reception rather than a separate room and isn't hugely atmospheric but does hold two AA rosettes for its food. Menu choices are quite classic - starters might include smoked salmon terrine, followed by mains of roast pork belly or pan-fried seabass.

Browns: simple menu, fresh, local ingredients. Open daily. Mains from £15.

The Club Lounge and Bar: quick lunches, informal dinners. Lunch and dinner only. Mains from £11.
