This former 16th-century coaching inn sits within an aristocratic estate and was taken over by the local laird and his wife. They've transformed it into a stylish, elegantly comfortable property, comprising eight bedrooms within the main building and several external cottages. There is the main restaurant, Eyas, and a comprehensive wellness programme.

Part of an 11,000-acre estate, the hotel sits on the edge of a small village green, surrounded by local houses. Nearby are a set of ponds, some of which you can swim in, a set of shops and a deli within an area called The Rural Yard, and, a short walk away, the magnificent Castle Ashby gardens, open to visitors (and free for hotel guests). The location is delightfully rural; you can go for walks across fields, or stay local and shop at the well-stocked deli.

By car: The Falcon is around 2 hours from London, just over an hour from Birmingham and 3 hours from Manchester. There is free parking available on-site.

By train: London Euston to Northampton takes 1 hour. The hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to Northampton.

The lobby is airy and light, and the walls are painted in rich, matte tones of slate grey and moss green. In the East Wing Lounge, colours evoke nature, with shades of rust and sage, scattered with sculptures made from wood and twigs. The staff are enthusiastic and friendly, and the vibe is comfortable and homely.

The wellness programme is the main focus here, and you can easily book fitness and well-being classes or take part in guided nature walks, which will inform you about the local flora and fauna. There is no spa, but a dedicated treatment room is located in one of the neighbouring cottages and offers a range of massages including reiki and hot stone.
