Growing up in Yorkshire and with family holidays in the Lake District, Helen, who writes for several UK national newspapers, developed a love of walking and the big outdoors. When it comes to cities, and food, Italy has the edge – and her heart.

On a narrow road, a couple of miles west of Rothbury in mid-Northumberland - this spot feels remote yet is only a ten-minute drive from the A697. With only a handful of farms as neighbours, there are unspoilt views the Cheviot Hills to the north and the Simonside Hills behind the farm.

By car: around 1 hour 15 minutes from Sunderland, 2 hours 30 minutes from Edinburgh and 4 hours from Manchester. Free parking available.

By train: direct train to Alnmouth from Newcastle (25 minutes), Edinburgh (1 hour) and London Kings Cross (3 hours 40 minutes). The hotel is a 40-minute drive from the station. Book trains to Alnmouth.

The stone-built, 18th-century farmhouse is sturdy - as you would expect to withstand northern winters - with thick walls, low ceilings, deep-set windows and practical warm curtains. Furniture is solid and traditional in the main house, and more contemporary in the barn conversion with its open beams.

Owner Ann greets guests with tea and home-made cake and is happy to help with local advice or leave guests alone, as they prefer. The simple sitting room in the main house, with its family photographs, has an oil-fired range; the lounge in the barn has a wood-fired stove. There's also a pretty courtyard garden. Wet gear can be dried, bikes stored and fishing arranged - and there are maps to borrow.
