OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The hotel sits just a few hundred yards from the main road between Matlock and Chesterfield, but despite some background traffic noise, there's also plenty of birdsong and the overall feel is peaceful and rural. If you're travelling by public transport it's only around a 12-15-minute taxi ride from Chesterfield station. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are less than 20 minutes drive away, as is Nine Ladies Stone Circle, a Bronze Age site.

By car: around 45 minutes from Sheffield, 1 hour 30 minutes from Birmingham and 3 hours 30 minutes from London. Free on-site parking.

By train: there are direct trains to Chesterfield Station from Sheffield (16 minutes), Nottingham (38 minutes) and London St Pancras (1 hour 45 minutes). The hotel is a 15-minute taxi ride from Chesterfield Station. Book trains to Chesterfield.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The original pub has had a recent facelift, but one that's respected its historic old bones. New fabrics and terracotta paints have added warmth to the thick stone walls, dark beams and flagged floors and there's a bit of a stag theme going on, with stag statues and an antler chandelier and wall lamps.

THE FACILITIES

Guests can (for a small fee) use the swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym at a Chesterfield fitness club and the hotel teams up with Chesterfield Golf Club to offer golfing breaks. There are various meeting/function rooms for hire, and it's very popular as a wedding venue.

BED AND BATH

A 2019 makeover injected chic new life into the bedrooms, ditching the old shades-of-brown in favour of lighter colours and bright modern florals. Bathrooms are smart, with underfloor heating, rainfall showers and separate baths.

Room types: Superior, Accesible, Family rooms, Hardwick, Devonshire, Chatsworth, Haddon suites

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom, TV, king-size bed, tea and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The restaurant menu mixes old-school classics (a prawn cocktail starter, say, or pie-of-the-day main) with more contemporary dishes such as treacle-cured salmon with squid ink aioli or pineapple carpaccio with coconut sorbet and lime curd. There's a decent choice of vegan and gluten-free options, and the bar stocks a range of local ales.

Red Lion: modern British cuisine, local produce. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Dinner mains from £16.
