The original pub has had a recent facelift, but one that's respected its historic old bones. New fabrics and terracotta paints have added warmth to the thick stone walls, dark beams and flagged floors and there's a bit of a stag theme going on, with stag statues and an antler chandelier and wall lamps.

Guests can (for a small fee) use the swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym at a Chesterfield fitness club and the hotel teams up with Chesterfield Golf Club to offer golfing breaks. There are various meeting/function rooms for hire, and it's very popular as a wedding venue.

The restaurant menu mixes old-school classics (a prawn cocktail starter, say, or pie-of-the-day main) with more contemporary dishes such as treacle-cured salmon with squid ink aioli or pineapple carpaccio with coconut sorbet and lime curd. There's a decent choice of vegan and gluten-free options, and the bar stocks a range of local ales.

Red Lion: modern British cuisine, local produce. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Dinner mains from £16.
