The Crown and Castle is located right by Orford's 12th-century castle keep, near the centre of town on a quiet road. The Quayside is a short walk and Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, and Minsmere RSPB reserves are all within easy distance. There is lots nearby to discover, such as the castle and Orford Ness, and great food at Butley Oysterage, Pinneys Smokehouse and Pump Street Bakery.

By car: less than 3 hours from London, 4 hours 30 minutes from Manchester and 4 hours from Bristol. Free parking available.

By train: from London Liverpool Street (1 hour 10 minutes), Cambridge (1 hour 20 minutes) and Norwich (2 hours) to Saxmundham or Woodbridge, via Ipswich. Both stations are a 20-minute taxi drive from the hotel. Book trains.

This hotel has a quiet, understated style, rather than screaming out the preferences of the latest in-vogue interior designer. Features like cosy real fires and wooden beams combine with earthy grey and deep Victorian blue walls and lively artworks. Mobiles are not allowed at dinner.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are neutrally decorated, with walls painted in light grey spiced up with a few designer features and generously-sized beds. There are ten detached garden rooms in an annex by the main building which have access to a private lawned garden.

The pleasant dark wood-floored restaurant area, dominated by striking artwork, serves unpretentious dishes incorporating Suffolk produce such as locally reared meats and Orford-landed seafood, paired with a good selection of wines. In warmer months you can relax on the outdoor terrace overlooking Orford castle. Children under eight are not permitted in the restaurant in the evening.

Restaurant: relaxed dining room, fine dining with a twist. Seasonal menus, locally sourced produce. Mains include ballotine of chicken, trio of pork and whole stuffed plaice. Open daily for dinner, and Sunday for lunch.
