THE LOOK AND FEEL

This sprawling resort has a split personality: a charming 18th-century ivy-clad main house and a modern extension opposite featuring bedrooms and a maze of corridors. Grand chandeliers, wall-length tapestries and vintage furniture grace the house. Bedrooms are contemporary in style and facilities top-notch. The vibe is buzzy and relaxed.

THE FACILITIES

Service is impressive and the staff are highly trained. Check-in is friendly and professional, and we were escorted to our room. Later on, a concierge provides us with an interesting history of the hotel. Activities include a three-hole golf course, tennis, nature trail, jogging track, croquet, board games and DVD library.

FOOD AND DRINK

Dishes in the flagship four AA-Rosette Latymer restaurant are creative and exquisitely executed. Tasting menus - cue oyster emulsion with sorrel granita - and wine pairings are the star of the show. The two AA-Rosette Brasserie is more casual in ambience and menu. Breakfast is top-notch, comprising healthy bowls and eggs cooked to order all ways.

Latymer: One Michelin star, four AA Rosettes. Formal fine dining. Dinner served Weds-Sun 6-7.30pm. Tasting menu £110pp.

Hillfield: Casual, hyper-local produce. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £19.
