OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

At the end of a long and winding private drive, and with views over fields of sheep and cattle sloping down to the banks of the River Wharfe, the hotel feels rural yet is only ten minutes from the A1. A car is essential if you want to explore; on the other hand, the setting is deeply peaceful with birdsong the only noise. Harewood House, the 18th-century John Carr-designed treasure-filled home of the Earl and Countess of Harewood, is five miles, Wetherby race course is a couple of miles while Harrogate for classy shopping and afternoon tea is about 30 minutes.

By car: the hotel is 4 hours from London and 1 hour 30 mins from Manchester. Free parking is available on-site.

By train: London Kings Cross to York takes 1 hour 50 mins. The hotel is a 35-minute taxi ride from the station. Book trains to York.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

This charming small Georgian mansion, with a collonaded entrance and deep sash windows, has been imaginatively updated to create bright contemporary interiors without losing its historic feel. Neutral-coloured walls mix with original panelling and modern art, and sculptures are set against Georgian doorways while sleek velvet and leather upholstered furniture sits beside grand sash windows.

THE FACILITIES

With 100 acres of woodland and fields, including a stretch of the River Wharfe, there's ample space for guests. For those who prefer to sit and gaze at the view, there's a lovely terraced Italianate garden - good for afternoon tea and pre-dinner drinks, too. Inside, there's an elegant but unstuffy drawing room plus a clubby bar, while a small spa, gym and pool offer further diversions.

BED AND BATH

With their sober colours and dark-wood furniture, rooms have a masculine feel, although this is relieved by shots of ruby-red, burnished silver and statement lampshades. All are roomy - even the Classic rooms have comfortable space for armchairs and footstools - with higher-level rooms offering generous space to relax, often a four-poster or sleigh bed plus marble-tiled bathrooms.

Room type: Classic, Executive, Deluxe

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with exclusive toiletries by Gilchrist and Soames, TV, tea and coffee facilities, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

The Modern British menu is nicely varied - vegetarians are well looked after - with dishes that are confidently cooked yet without pretension; perhaps a starter of spiced salmon and cod fishcakes followed by Yorkshire Dales lamb with celeriac purée or sweet potato and leek crumble tart.

The Georgian Restaurant: 2 AA Rosettes, contemporary British dishes, local produce, extensive wine list. Open daily for dinner. Mains from £19.

The Drawing Room: morning coffee, snacks, drinks. Open 12-9.30pm.
