The main house is a handsome affair of creeper-covered walls, tall gables and big bay windows, while inside is a fine example of Arts and Crafts with polished wood floors, rich wood panelling, carved doors and William Morris-style wallpapers. Colours are rich and glowing, sofas are inviting, and there are several log fires. External buildings are less attractive (whitewashed render) but with large windows to enjoy the views.

With a couple of lounges, newspapers to browse, a comfortable bar and a lake view terrace, plus a small spa with an outdoor hot tub, it's easy to be indolent. But it would be a shame to miss the local walks, or you can book the tennis court for a game.

Together with the views, the dining experience is the highlight of the hotel. Whether you go for the eight course taster menu or a la carte, this is well-crafted food that gives a real flavour hit. Perhaps salmon with fennel or pigs cheek with parsnip and cashew. A simpler lounge menu is served Tuesday and Wednesday.

Restaurant: Smart fine dining or casual daytime dining. Award-winning, fresh, local flavours. Dinner 5pm-8.15pm Thurs-Mon with smart dress code. Mains from £19. Light meals from £11 served throughout the day.
