A mile and a half south of York, on the road to the racecourse - which lies opposite - it sits adjacent to the road and is also close to the main A64 to Leeds; traffic noise is inevitable when outdoors. On the other hand, it's easy to find, plus there's a bus stop outside for the ten-minute ride into the city. Apart from York Racecourse, there are no immediate attractions. The city centre is a ten-minute bus or taxi ride.

By car: the hotel is 40 minutes from Leeds, 1 hour 30 mins from Manchester and 4 hours 10 mins from London. There is free private parking at the hotel.

By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours. The station is a 10-minute taxi ride from the hotel. Book trains to York.

With its symmetrical good looks, the William and Mary house is a study in classic country-house style. Sash-windowed rooms, decorated with classic stripes and florals, are comfortably scattered with deep sofas, polished antiques, china display cabinets and large oil paintings. Wood panelling and handsome fireplaces remind of the building's age.

It has all the trappings of a classic country house hotel but on a more intimate scale: a small spa with a pool, plus a gym (both in converted cottages), a terrace overlooking grounds that include a walled garden and staff who pop up as you need them. Several sitting rooms, with real fires, give plenty of room for guests, and coffee tables are agreeably spread with newspapers and magazines.

This is proper fine dining with a choice of a taster or fixed-price menus, and kicking off with canapés in the drawing room. Classic British dishes have been gently updated, perhaps partridge ravioli with pomegranate followed by halibut with scallops and sea vegetables. Breakfast has a short cold buffet followed by traditional hot dishes including kippers, poached haddock and the full Yorkshire.

The restaurant: smart fine dining, inventive British cuisine, tasting menu. Open every day for breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner, plus Sat & Sun lunch. Two courses £39, three courses £45.
