OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Between the shopping and financial areas and just off The Headrow - one of the city's principal streets on the northern edge of the centre - it's a ten-minute walk from the station. Although a historic building it's become part of The Light, a modern, glass-roofed shopping mall with a multiplex cinema. Good soundproofing prevents noise disturbance despite the busy location. Leeds Art Gallery, with its nationally important collection of British modern and contemporary art, is opposite the hotel's main entrance; the Arena is a five-minute walk to the north.

By car: around 2 hours 20 minutes from Birmingham and 4 hours 15 minutes from London or Edinburgh.

By train: there are direct trains to Leeds station from Sheffield (1 hour), Manchester Picadilly (2 hours) and London Kings Cross (2 hours 20 minutes). The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the station. Book trains to Leeds.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The grand double height ground floor of the Art Deco building - the former head office of the Leeds Permanent Building Society - with its arched windows and pillars, is a semi open-plan bar, dining and lounging space with a clubby feel of parquet floors, leather armchairs and high-backed booths. By contrast, bedroom corridors with their soft carpets, sober colours and tan coloured wood-panelled doors have a grand, classic-hotel feel.

THE FACILITIES

The ground floor has plenty of options for relaxing, or working, with a long bar area plus two semi-separate lounges with leather banquettes and armchairs plus a toasty gas-fired indoor-style fire-out. Guests receive discounted access to a leisure centre with a gym and pool in the next-door 'Light' shopping mall plus discounted parking at a nearby car park.

BED AND BATH

Most bedrooms have the same sleek looks of grey-and-white colour palette, tinted glass-topped furniture and black and white bathrooms. Burnished silver headboards and striking white floor lamps add a touch of glamour. The exception is fourth floor rooms with blue highlights and honeyed-wood furniture. Be aware that some rooms face inwards or onto the shopping mall.

Room types: Standard, Superior, Premium, Family rooms, Suites

Key amenities: ensuite with shower, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities

FOOD AND DRINK

The main feature of Fire Lake, the hotel's slightly awkwardly named restaurant, is its Josper grill, so expect dishes such as steaks, burgers (vegan, too), grilled chicken and Moroccan spiced lamb, plus a couple of fish and vegetarian options. Cooking is competent if a little lacking in flair. Breakfast is well thought-through with a generous buffet to suit all tastes and diets.

Fire Lake Restaurant & Bar: comfortable and cosy, American grill classics and vegan options. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
