The resort is located three miles south west of the city on Route d'Amizmiz. This is a flat, desert landscape and a car or taxi is necessary if you want to do anything beyond its walls. Transfers to the airport take ten minutes, and to the medina 15 minutes, and there is free parking. The Argan Golf Resort is on the opposite side of the highway and Beldi Country Club is next door, but this is a place where guests tend to stay put.

By plane: direct flights from London to Marrakech Menara take around 4 hours. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the airport. Free parking on-site. Book flights to Marrakech.

Created by leading French designer Jacques Garcia, this is a hotel with a wow factor. Get ready for opulent, colour-charged interiors and a long, sunken pool with serried palms and smart white loungers. Grand buildings built in red brick with green roof tiles are tempered by grounds blooming with olive and citrus trees; expect to do a fair bit of walking.

A luxurious boutique in the main building sells jewellery, evening wear and Moroccan-crafted goodies for the home. Complimentary bikes are available for a spin around the grounds (although there isn't far to go) and there's a fitness centre with hi-tech equipment in the spa. Usefully, check-out is not until noon.

The rooms and suites are set in a single, two-storey building bordering the pool. All come with a terrace or patio, dressing room and separate bath and shower. Interiors are restful but not dull with black-and-white floor tiles, black wooden ceilings and boldly coloured furnishings.

Room types: Superior Room, Deluxe Room, Prestige Room, Suite, Villa, Selman Villa

Key amenities: ensuite bathroom with neroli-scented toiletries, bathrobes, hairdryer, Nespresso machine, private terrace, air conditioning, TV, free Wi-Fi

Assyl means 'authentic' in Moroccan and this flagship dining room is an expensive and formal affair with ornate décor, candles and an oud (lute) player. The mood is more relaxed, but still pricey, in the indoor/outdoor Le Selman restaurant with comforting dishes from roasted asparagus to rosemary lamb chops.

Assyl: garden restaurant, Moroccan cuisine. Open daily for dinner. Set menu from 750 mad.

Le Selman: Refined and cosy, quality ingredients, flavoursome dishes. Open daily.
