Bus and coach passengers are joining the list of travellers on public transport covered by EU-wide rights to compensation for delays or cancellations.

A European Parliament vote gives new rights to people on road trips of more than 155 miles.

The rule, due to come into force in 2013, adds long-distance bus and coach travel to existing legislation setting minimum standards for EU air, rail and boat passengers.

Under the rules, the disabled and infirm will get free assistance at terminals and on board.
