For a century, it was the Westminster public library; now it's the Cinnamon Club, Old Westminster Library, Great Smith Street, London (020-7222 2555; cinnamonclub.com) one of the UK's most opulent Indian restaurants.

Part of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson's influential Seagram building, the Four Seasons, 99 East 52nd Street, New York (00 1 212 754 9494; fourseasonsrestaurant. com) is one of the city's most iconic restaurants.

With its 135ft-high parabolic arches, the 1960s Theme Building in Los Angeles airport wouldn't look out of place in a sci-fi comic book. Its futuristically designed Encounter restaurant, 209 World Way, Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles (00 1 310 215 5151; encounterlax.com) would fit right in too.

Restaurants with spectacular views all too often rely on what's outside the window to distract from the mediocre food. Not so at the Eiffel Tower, where Jules Verne, Champ de Mars 75007, Paris (00 33 1 45 55 61 44; tour-eiffel.fr) boasts a Michelin star.

At Guillaume at Bennelong, Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point, Sydney (00 61 2 9241 1999; guillaume atbennelong.com.au) you can dine beneath the concrete ribs of the Sydney Opera House on celebrated chef Guillaume Brahimi's local seafood.

Martin Berasategui of Jatetxea Restaurante at the Guggenheim Museum, Abandoibarra Et 2, 48001 Bilbao (00 34 94 423 93 33; martinberasategui.com) is as daring and original as architect Frank Gehry, who created the building.

Sir Terence Conran's design for Lenbach, Ottostrasse 6, 80333 Munich (00 49 89 549130-0; lenbach.de) contrasts the baroque detailing of the Bernheimer Palace's 19th-century interior with modern features.

Jai Mahal Palace, Jacob Road, Civil Lines, Jaipur 302 006, Rajasthan (00 91 141 2223636; tajhotels.com) is a former residence of the Prime Minister of Jaipur. The luxury hotel's Cinnamon restaurant serves a modern version of Punjabi and Moghul-style cooking.
