From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Switzerland is the top Valentine's spot this year, according to American travel blogger "Adventure Girl," aka Stephanie Michaels.

Adventure Girl has 1.5 million Twitter followers and has become a surprise hit in travel writing over the past year. After travelling exhaustively throughout 2009, she picked Swiss resorts in Zurich, Lucerne and Lausanne as the best places for Valentine's getaways, alongside properties in Germany, Mexico, China, Tahiti and the US.

Celebrity hotel Baur au Lac, which has hosted Michael Jackson, Elton John and Barbra Streisand was a favorite, as was Hotel Weggis and Ipare Spa on the banks of Lake Lucerne. Finally, the spectacular Beau Rivage Palace on the shores of Lake Geneva was praised, with Michaels praising the cuisine of Anne-Sophie Pic, the only female French chef to be awarded three Michelin stars.

Other picks include Bora Bora Nui, at the foot of Tahiti's Mount Pahia and complete with its own chapel. Asian hotels in Hong Kong and Macau are praised for their beautiful décor, amenities and technology, whilst Berlin's Hotel de Rome is described as a "place for sparks to fly all over again."
