Try skiing’s newest destination next winter – Sweden

Super-short transfers, family-friendly slopes and Scandi-cool winter adventures – it’s no wonder Sweden is fast becoming the ski destination to watch

(Crystal Ski Holidays)

Arrival in Sweden is an entirely relaxed affair with Crystal Ski Holidays. Rather than navigating local transport or coordinating car hires, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a fully coordinated transfer. Your rep is there to provide a warm welcome and ensure your journey to the resort is as smooth as possible. By having every detail of your onward travel pre-arranged, you’re free to simply sit back, enjoy the Swedish scenery, and look forward to your first day on the slopes.

But now imagine something even better – imagine that just 15 to 40 minutes after stepping on the transfer, you’re already at your accommodation. That’s now possible in Sweden thanks to the recently built Scandinavian Mountains Airport, which began taking direct flights from the UK this winter, giving you the thrill of trying a new ski destination.

It’s an initiative of the local business community, transforming a former airstrip into an international airport, aided by cameras and sensors that improve visibility at night and in bad weather. This has revolutionised Swedish skiing for Britons, offering easy access to the snow-sure charms of places such as Hundfjället, Högfjället, Kläppen and Stöten.

These resorts are particularly popular with young families looking to enjoy a winter wonderland in a relaxed, unpressured environment – especially having dispensed with the three-hour transfer.

But increasingly, young couples are wondering why children should have all the fun with husky sledding, ice karting, snow biking and snow tubing. They make great adventures for ‘forever young’ adults too, who also appreciate the quietly cool Scandi vibes of Swedish skiing. Not to mention the attraction of cross-country skiing; all these resorts have access to extensive trail networks.

So, with few worries about snow at this northerly latitude, you can book next winter’s most exciting new break now, in the knowledge that all Crystal Ski Holidays are ABTA and ATOL protected and that you’re travelling with one of the UK’s biggest and most trusted travel companies.

But which of the four resorts should you choose?

Hundfjället

With its ski hire shops, beginner slopes and ski school meeting point all a snowball’s throw from the accommodation in the village centre, Hundfjället is all about making life easy for families. Children will love spotting trolls on the Trolls Forest slope, not to mention the resort’s mascot, Valle the Snowman – a kind of live version of Olaf from Frozen.

For more confident skiers, there’s plenty on offer too, thanks to the lift link with the charming resort of Tandådalen, giving the ski area an impressive 45km of slopes in total, with a decent smattering of steeper runs between the two.

Högfjället

Högfjället is similar to Hundfjället, but in reverse. Unusually, the resort sits on top of a hill and you start the day skiing down to the magic carpets and easy slopes, complete with mini tunnels and fun characters to help little ones find their ski legs.

Like Hundfjället, Högfjället is linked to a bigger resort, Lindvallen, again giving 42km of slopes for confident intermediates (such as parents who’ve offloaded their charges for the morning), though with fewer steep runs.

Your lift pass is valid across all four resorts, so it’s worth taking the 10-minute bus ride between the ski areas on at least one day.

Kläppen

(Crystal Ski Holidays)

Family-run Kläppen has one of the few gondolas in the region – handy if it’s cold or if you want to meet a non-skiing partner in the restaurant at the top of the mountain.

Although the lift pass also includes a day’s skiing in Stöten, it’s an hour away by bus. So Kläppen is really one for beginners who want gentle slopes without fast skiers around – and that cosy gondola to warm up in if they’re unused to the chill.

If you’re a little nervous about getting your first taste of skiing – and you really shouldn’t be – this is the place to go.

Stöten

(Crystal Ski Holidays)

Stöten is another resort geared primarily towards beginners. But what its 32km of pistes lack in challenge they make up for in slope time. Lifts open as early as 7.30am on some mornings and you can ski under the lights until 6pm on certain evenings, meaning that if one of you is on babysitting duty, the other can maximise their time on the snow.

When it comes to off-slope fun, Stöten is perhaps the best placed of the four. The Vattufjäll centre has a pool, sauna and bowling alley, and it’s particularly easy to try snowy activities such as snowmobile safaris or dog-sledding tours, gazing out at peaceful Scandi scenes as you speed along.

If you’re ready to try somewhere different next winter, Sweden offers an easy, snow-sure adventure with a refreshing Scandinavian twist. And with Crystal Ski Holidays taking care of every detail – from flight to transfer – you can focus on enjoying the shortest journey yet from plane to piste.
