The snow gods have sent a huge amount of snow to the Alps and Pyrenees. Over a metre is expected by the end of the weekend across a large area. The current snowstorm could prove to be the season-changer, especially as it is not forecast to cease until tonight, with the heaviest falls around the French/Swiss border.

Further east in Austria, between 20-40cm can be expected, with some spots seeing more. Current forecasts are pointing towards a brighter day on Monday, so this could be the best bet for clear overhead conditions as more snow is predicted from Tuesday onwards. Be careful to check the latest avalanche bulletins as the conditions are extremely volatile.

There has been widespread cloud cover across Austria, with many resorts, particularly in the west, seeing lots of fresh snow. Overall temperatures remain below freezing, keeping the pistes in an excellent state.

France saw intense snowfall at the end of the week. Once the weather clears, and the avalanche danger drops, some excellent skiing will be on offer.

Heavy snow is falling across Switzerland, but the avalanche danger has reached Level 4/5 in some regions. Once the storm subsides, totals of around a metre are expected for many resorts. Tomorrow is currently looking sunny, before more snow returns on Tuesday.

Italy has had far more varied weather with a mix of bright sunshine and cloud cover. Eastern Italy is seeing some snow fall as it makes its way across Austria and Switzerland, but overall the temperatures are below freezing, so the pistes are intact.

In Andorra, the pistes are currently hard packed. Some very heavy snow is forecast over the weekend, with upwards of a metre forecast in some favoured spots.

There are some great conditions across Scandinavia. Temperatures remain low so the snow is excellent both on and off piste. Meanwhile, Bulgaria caught a light fall of snow on Wednesday, freshening up the slopes.

Scotland has had snow most of the week and more is set to fall today. The skiing should be excellent once the stormy weather subsides.
