Felin Fach Griffin, Powys, Wales

"The simple things in life done well" is the motto of this rather special inn – indeed the owners use the same slogan on the other hotels they run in west Cornwall, the very comfy Gurnard's Head near Zennor and the Old Coastguard in Mousehole – but we reckon nowhere quite exemplifies it quite as much as this gastro-pub with rooms, situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in the Welsh Borders. It lives up to its billing in every way: it has seven very comfortable rooms above a restaurant that is one of the best in the region. It's also a proper pub, serving well-priced, well-kept local ales, with comfy seats for local drinkers and a roaring fire in winter. Oh, and dogs incidentally are also welcome (along with children) in the rooms upstairs. These are all different in size and style, but like the owners' other properties they all have big comfortable beds, Roberts Radios, homemade biscuits and fresh flowers, posh toiletries and plenty of reading matter for when all you want to do is slob about. Breakfasts are sumptuous and delicious, and a good indicator of the quality of the dinner you'll enjoy once you're back from a hard day's walking, book-browsing in Hay or just pottering around nearby Brecon, Abergavenny or Crickhowell. Indeed there's so much to do in the area, but also so many reasons to stay put at the hotel, that we reckon there is perhaps no better place for a lazy weekend away.
