Whether you’re a bloke who prefers his hair to look au naturel, favours the slicked-back look a la Leo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street, or somewhere in between, there’s a product out there to suit your style.
We’ve tried a range of waxes, gels, creams and pomades so you don’t have to; from L’Oreal’s good-value gel to Aveda’s exotically scented grooming clay.

2. Paul Mitchell Firm Style Dry Wax, £15, lookfantastic
If you’re looking to create texture, this is ideal for extra definition. It is easy to apply, just rub a little on your fingertips and work through your hair. Beware: a little goes a long way.
3. American Crew Pomade, £10, amazon
This water-based pomade is for blokes that like a slicked-back look (think Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street). It’ll keep hair in place all day and it shampoos out easily - no next-day residue here.
4. Toni & Guy Styling Fibre, £5, amazon
One for anyone looking for a more natural look; this product from the ubiquitous high street hair experts will hold a style in place, just not as rigidly
as some products. With a matte finish and no stickiness, it creates the opposite of a try-hard look. Currently on offer.
5. Studio Lines Invisi’ Hold 24hour Natural, Clear Gel, £4, boots
This good-value, versatile gel is a bit of a classic from L’Oreal. Use it for textured or sleeker styles. Available in Normal or Extra Strength, depending on the sort of hold you’re after.
6. AVEDA men pure-formance™ grooming clay, £24, amazon
If you’re sh ine-adverse, this lightweight clay, with a subtle but refreshing citrusy, spicy and minty scent combo, will add thickness to your hair and give control, without any tell-tale slickness or greasiness that comes with some products. Expensive, yes, but it will last.
7. Go 24.7 Styling Cream and Grooming Cream, £15, lookfantastic
David Beckham’s a Go 24.7 fan. For a barnet like Becks, this lightweight cream worked through dry or damp hair will add volume to your hair
and give control, while still looking natural. It’s sulphate and paraben free, so no nasties.
8. Lavera Strong Hold Styling Gel, £8, soorganic
This is one of the organic specialists’ best-selling products, made with organic aloe vera and bamboo, and is totally free from parabens and synthetic fragrance often found in some hair products. Use on wet or dry hair for a strong hold. You only need a pea-sized amount so it will last.
9. Kiehl’s Creative Cream Wax, £15, johnlewis
This non-greasy cream wax from the premium American brand is a stylists’ favourite thanks to its strong hold combined with a natural look. An ideal one for blokes looking to boost thin hair.
10. Schwarzkopf 3D Mension Mattifying Cream, £6, amazon
This dry texture cream is a good one if you want to give your hair some extreme structure. Don’t worry about the product being visable though; as it says on the tin, it has the mattest of matte finishes.
