Whether you’re after a classic trench or a 2015 take on the style, we’ve found coats to suit all budgets. Here’s our edit.
1. M&S Buttonsafe Tipped Belted Mac, £45, marksandspencer.com
This purse-friendly mac, available in six colours, is ideal for spring. M&S are keen on their trademark technologies and this one has “heat-fused” buttons. If you’re in-between sizes, go smaller.
2. Phase Eight Tabatha Trench Coat, £120, phase-eight.com
Here’s a classic trench. Double-breasted with a belt and button tabs on the cuffs, it’s better tailored than a lot of pieces on the high street. Choose from pink, navy or beige.
3. Hobbs Sophia Trench, £199, hobbs.co.uk
The belt and button detailing give it that distinctive trench shape, but the zips and clean lines make it look modern. The rich blue is a nice change from neutrals.
4. Topshop Soft Bonded Trench Coat, £85, topshop.com
An elegant coat that looks more expensive than it is. It gives an over-sized silhouette that still flatters. The colour makes it perfect for between seasons.
5. New Look Stone Draped Trench Coat, £39.99, newlook.com
New Look’s simple open-front beige trench is a good one for those warmer spring days. It’s good value and unlike some pricier pieces, you can put it in the washing machine if it gets grubby.
6. LK Bennett Evelina Trench Coat, £375, lkbennett.com
This coat will make you stand out from the pack. Double breasted with a wide belt and buckle in a dusty pink with a subtle sheen, it is the details which makes it special.
7. Lands’ End Women’s Heritage Trench Coat, £100, landsend.co.uk
The navy combined with contrasting piping on this short trench gives this a slight nautical vibe. It’s more water resistant than most on the list.
8. Helly Hansen W Welsey Trench, £150, hellyhansen.com
Helly Hansen is best known for its outdoor gear rather than its fashion pieces. This coat combines the two, but still retains a distinctive trench style. Choose from five colours.
9. Happy Rainy Days Winter Trench, £141.50, rainfrog.co.uk
If a plain trench leaves you cold, here is a compromise. This single-breasted one is well padded with a detachable hood and it comes in a variety of patterns, including this geometric-print one.
10. Zara Cotton Trench Coat, £79.99, zara.com
Zara nails outerwear, and this double-breasted trench is another example. Coming to mid-thigh, we found it a super flattering fit and true to size.
11. Uterque Navy Nappa Leather Coat, £425, www.uterque.com
This almost didn’t make our round-up because we’re the price-tag is huge, but actually this limited edition coat in top-notch nappa leather is absolutely gorgeous. With a straight cut design and belt to cinch in at the waist, it’s built to last too.
For a good wardrobe staple, we love Phase Eight’s Tabatha. For something more fashion-forward, go for Top Shop’s Soft Bonded Trench.
