Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the pack with the most Oscar nominations this year – but some surprises and snubs have certainly shaken things up.

The nominations were announced today (24 January), as awards season continues.

Among the surprise nominees this year is Paul Mescal who received a Best Actor nod for his role in the father-daughter drama Aftersun. He is nominated alongside Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, and fellow Irish actor Colin Farrell.

It is a big year for Ireland, with Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon joining Mescal and Farrell in the list of nominees. The Banshees of Inisherin, An Irish Goodbye and A Quiet Girl all received nods this year.

Another shock came when Ana de Armas was nominated for Best Actress thanks to her role in the hugely polarising Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, which The Independent gave one-star.

Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams hosted the announcement presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.

The 95th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday (12 March) with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host for the third time.

What is ‘To Leslie’ about?

After a last-minute, celebrity-driven Oscars campaign, To Leslie managed to secure one nomination this year.

The film received a limited release in October 2022. It stars Andrea Riseborough (who received her first Oscar nod for the role), Allison Janney, Marc Maron, and Andre Royo.

To Leslie follows Riseborough as Leslie, a troubled alcoholic and single mother from West Texas.

After spending her lottery winnings on alcohol and drugs, she struggles to provide for her son.

Oscar nominees for Best Original Song

It’s not all about the visuals. These original songs earned Oscar recognition, too.

Notably, it was the only category that the hit film RRR received a nomination in, which may come as a disappointment to the film’s devoted fan base who might have been hoping for more.

Who gets an invite?

It’s the hottest ticket in tinseltown – but who actually gets to go?

The Dolby Theatre, which has hosted the ceremony since 2002, seats 3,400 people across four levels and 20 opera boxes.

Oscar nominees and presenters each receive a pair of tickets and can request an additional pair. Most, of course, do.

As per The LA Times, nominees account for approximately 800 tickets. After that blocks are then reserved for the show’s broadcast network (ABC), the telecast’s sponsors, the production team, the accountants, the legal team, media, academy museum donors and various dignitaries, such as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Movie studios too, will receive a group of tickets. According to the publication, indie studios have complained that major studios receive more than their fair share.

Remove the spots that have obstructed views (these are occupied by seat fillers) and there’s only a few hundred available seats left.

Members of the academy are invited to enter a ticket lottery, which is conducted the old-fashioned way: written on slips of paper and pulled out of a drum.
