Game of Thrones fans remember most divisive episode one year on: 'I'm still not over it'

'It was so bad we can't even rewatch the old episodes in quarantine'

Game of Thrones fans took to Twitter to remember season eight, episode five “The Bells” one year after it first aired.

The divisive episode shows the final battle for control of the Iron Throne, during which Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clark) uses her dragons to burn down King’s Landing.

Many were frustrated by the pacing and logic of the story, as Daenerys seemed to suddenly turn into a villain.

YouTube star Patrick Smith took to Twitter to voice his frustration with the episode: “A year ago today, Game of Thrones died, forever. IT WAS SO BAD WE CAN'T EVEN REWATCH THE OLD EPS IN QUARANTINE AND I'M STILL NOT OVER IT. Please press F to pay respects.”

Another fan wrote: “One year ago today, 8x05 aka ‘The Bells’ aired. The episode where Daenerys Targaryen's character was butchered in the stupidest, most nonsensical way. The only good thing about it was Emilia giving an outstanding performance despite the s*** writing”.

With reference to “The Bells”, one fan said: “This episode came exactly a year ago today and some considered it to be the end of game of thrones. fans are still angry at d&d for ruining the franchise. she wasn’t her father. but d&d kinda forgot about that huh?”

“Remember when GOT made us believe that Daenerys was destined to kill the Night King but wasn't ? Ndithi scenes”, recalled one viewer of the show.

Other fans took the opportunity to show their support for Daenerys, making it clear that they were choosing to ignore the destructive behaviour patterns she was given in season eight.

“#IStandByDaenerys” began one fan. “The First of her Name, the last of the bloodline and the greatest of her house”.

Another fan just pretended as though season eight didn’t exist. “Daenerys sails for Westeros. Also known as the real ending of Game of Thrones, everything about this scene is perfect.”

Elsewhere, fans commented on their overall dislike of season eight.

One said: “If season 8 of Game of Thrones had 12/13 episodes the ending would have banged, I’m still not over how badly they fumbled season 8”.

“Just finished rewatching Game of Thrones with Emily, such excitement, drama and suspense all ruined by season 8” said a disappointed viewer.

Another fan agreed: “I miss 2019 when season 8 of Game of Thrones was the worst part of the year.”
