Greggs don’t like to shout about it, but there’s a way to get their pastries for a discount price – just as long as you don’t mind them cold.

Greggs owns 14 lesser-known “outlet” stores around the UK that exist to sell day-old doughnuts and sandwiches.

In the other 1600 Greggs stores around the UK, sandwiches are made daily and savoury pastries baked during the day.

These and other fresh products are not carried over to the next day. In many stores left over food is donated to charity through local partnerships.

But in a few, special locations, it goes to outlet stores where it can be sold for cheap, just as long as the customer doesn't mind them not being warmed up.

Simon Duke is a reporter at local paper the Chronicle in the North East, where Greggs was founded.

He visited a Greggs outlet in Westgate, Newcastle, with £5 to see exactly how much he could get for his money.

“Having not had any lunch, I was ready to fill my boots and picked up a four pack of sausage rolls, a four pack of cheese and onion rolls, a four pack of cheese scones, a pair of chicken bakes, a pair of sausage and bean melts and, because I couldn’t resist them, a bag of 10 mini doughnuts, which put me over budget by all of 50p,” Mr Dukes said.

Here’s how those prices compare to a normal Gregg’s store, according the paper:

4 pack of sausage rolls

Greggs Outlet - £1

Greggs - £2.40

4 pack of cheese and onion rolls

Greggs Outlet - £1

Greggs - £2.40

2 chicken bakes

Greggs Outlet - £1

Greggs - £2.60

2 sausage and bean melts

Greggs Outlet - £1

Greggs - £2.60

4 pack of cheese scones

Greggs Outlet - £1

Greggs - £1.50

Greggs spokesperson confirmed that a limited number of outlets exist but that the long term goal of the company is to donate excess food to charity.

“At Greggs we pride ourselves on our daily-fresh approach to food, and while we have operated a Bakery Outlet format that sells unsold food to customers the following day at discounted prices for a number of years, this is not a business priority and there are only 14 within our estate. Our long term focus is to increase the amount of unsold food that we donate to charitable organisations,” the spokesperson said.
