‘Green woman’ replaces green man to mark International Women’s Day

TfL hope that ‘increasing the visibility of women’ will remind Londoners of their ‘huge contributions’

The green man has been replaced with a green woman at 20 pedestrian crossings in London to mark International Women’s Day.

The traffic signals feature women in a range of shapes and sizes beyond the traditional image of a woman in a dress and are aimed at “recognising the contribution women make to all aspects of society”, Transport for London (TfL) said.

The green women can be spotted in the high streets of Clapham, Brixton and Lewisham, as well as at Hyde Park Corner and outside King’s Cross St Pancras tube station.

TfL spokesperson Felicity Luckett said that the company is “excited to have created a set of new diverse green woman pedestrian crossings” to mark International Women’s Day.

She added that it is “important” to “commemorate the hard work, contributions and success of women across London” and that “increasing the visibility of women” will remind Londoners of these “huge contributions”.

TfL say that the traffic signals were produced for free by Siemens Mobility and comply with all the same safety features as the green man.

In 2016, LGBTQ+ couples were featured as traffic signals at pedestrian crossings around London to mark Pride Month.

The same symbols have been used again in subsequent years.
