A heroic Crystal Palace performance downed Manchester City to claim the FA Cup and a first major trophy at Wembley Stadium.

Ebere Eze's first-half goal and Dean Henderson's penalty save proved vital moments for Oliver Glasner's side in a day of destiny for the Eagles.

Pep Guardiola will feel aggrieved after Henderson remained on the pitch, despite a VAR check, with the Eagles goalkeeper touching the ball outside the box and appearing to deny the Norwegian a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Daniel Munoz thought he had doubled Palace's lead in the second half, but Ismaila Sarr was offside after a VAR check.

And Guardiola could only throw on Phil Foden and a debut for Argentine youngster Claudio Echeverri, who was denied by Henderson late on.

Palace survived and held on for the greatest moment in their history.

Why is Jean-Philippe Mateta wearing a protective helmet in the FA Cup final?

While Crystal Palace have taken a dramatic route to the FA Cup final against Manchester City, striker Jean-Philippe’s journey to Wembley went via the hospital after suffering a horror injury earlier in in the competition.

In March, the Frenchman required 25 stitches after a high challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts caught Mateta in the head and left his ear “destroyed”.

Mateta was taken to hospital and Roberts was sent off - and subsequently banned for six games - as Crystal Palace progressed with a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park.

Pep Guardiola: Winning the FA Cup would be ‘massively important’ for Man City

Pep Guardiola feels it is “massively important” for Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

City have had to readjust their targets this season after failing to defend their Premier League title and exiting the Champions League prematurely.

Guardiola’s side are hoping to salvage something from a disappointing campaign by beating Crystal Palace in Saturday’s final at Wembley and securing a top-five spot next week.

Match facts

Haaland has failed to score in any of his five appearances for Manchester City at Wembley stadium, with three of those coming in the FA Cup.

Kevin de Bruyne has been involved in four goals in his previous three final matches, scoring one and assisting three.

Eberechi Eze has been involved in four goals in his last four games in the FA Cup (3 goals, 1 assist), putting them 1-0 up in their semi-final win against Aston Villa.

Erling Haaland: ‘Man City’s season has been catastrophic, horrific, and boring’

Erling Haaland is often a man apart. Perhaps it is the freakish goalscoring feats, perhaps the immediately identifiable look of the giant, long-haired blond. The Norwegian’s assessment of a Manchester City season that few predicted may jar with those outsiders who had tired of their dominance.

“It is not nice to lose so many games,” Haaland told BBC Sport. “It is boring and not fun.” Others found the repetitive element came in City winning, in an unprecedented quartet of consecutive league titles, in four seasons when they racked up 187 victories in all competitions.

Those who suffered amid City’s superiority, therefore, may have found much to enjoy in their demise, in 15 defeats, in five of them being in succession, and in eight in 12 games. Even in a 0-0 draw with a Southampton side who had been marooned on 11 points.

How Oliver Glasner made Crystal Palace fans believe (but why we find it so hard)

You know that feeling of being ready? Where everything is in its correct place, your socks are pulled up, your laces tied perfectly, you’re physically and mentally prepared and it’s go time?

I’d love to feel like that today.

I don’t, but I’d really love to.

I do think Oliver Glasner feels like it though, as my team Crystal Palace prepare to face Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

He even said he does, though what a manager says in a press conference is, more often than not, fairly far removed from the internal monologue whirring around his brain as a journalist asks the question that everybody knows can’t be answered honestly.

Man City physio and Crystal Palace coach separated in bizarre scenes at FA Cup final

There were bizarre scenes in the FA Cup final at Wembley as Crystal Palace coach Paddy McCarthy and a member of the Manchester Cityphysio team to be separated after squaring off on the touchline.

With emotions high at Wembley, former Republic of Ireland international McCarthy and the City doctor had to be pulled apart after arguing on the sidelines and angrily approaching each other.

The City physio had to be pushed back to the bench by manager Pep Guardiola, with frustration among the City backroom staff building as Palace led 1-0 at Wembley.
