Manchester United are trying to reach the Champions League quarter-finals (PA)

Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League as Atletico Madrid triumphed 1-0 at Old Trafford to record a 2-1 aggregate win and advance to the quarter-finals.

Old Trafford demanded a classic European night, but only got a vintage Atletico performance, to produce another dismally routine Champions League exit for the Red Devils.

Their season is good as over after this 1-0 defeat, courtesy of Renan Lodi’s first-half header, bar a needlessly panicked chase for a place in the competition next season.

If they manage that, it will need immense changes for that to be anything other than yet another forgettable exit. This is a shadow of the club it should be, as a night like this proved. There was no grand-stand comeback, no great display from Cristiano Ronaldo. He was a ghost, but one of many. His psychological hold over Atletico is broken, to go with so much in the United team.

Atletico, for all the intensity of their celebration, didn’t really require the same intensity to their display. They had too much nous for United, too much Champions League experience.

Diogo Dalot has an attempted cross charged down but the ball comes back to Bruno Fernandes. He flicks the ball into the box but Jan Oblak comes out and claims it.

He receives the ball and slots it into a decent area near the back post. Elanga can’t get to it before the ball crosses the byline. Was that a shot or a pass from Fred? Hard to tell.

This is good for Atletico Madrid, they’ll take as much time as possible out of the game, delaying restarts and taking their time over set plays. The free kick comes into the box to David De Gea who’s clearance is terrible. He boots it up to Rodrigo de Paul and the midfielder has a go from range, sending his effort high and wide.

Alex Telles chucks the ball to Harry Maguire who curls in a cross from the left but sends it over everyone’s heads and out of play.

All eyes will be on Old Trafford as Atletico Madrid come to town on Tuesday, when the round-of-16 encounter will resume at 1-1 thanks to Anthony Elanga’s late goal for the fortunate Red Devils in Spain.

United are attempting to reach the Champions League last eight for just the third time since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, who was in the stands on Saturday as Ronaldo scored his first Premier League hat-trick since 2008.
