Pioli confirms Leao likely to return for AC Milan in 2nd leg of Champions League semifinals

Inter Milan reached the Champions League final in competent fashion with a controlled and clinical display against city rivals AC Milan.

Carrying a two-goal advantage into the second leg the Nerazzurri didn’t need to overly exert themselves in attack and instead focused on winning the midfield battle to cut out the supply lines to Milan’s returning star Rafael Leao. The first half was a tight affair with both goalkeeper called into action, Andre Onana smothered Brahim Diaz’s early shot and Mike Maignan denied Edin Dzeko.

The half-time break came and went but Milan didn’t look like breaking through Inter’s solid backline. The introduction of Romelu Lukaku then ended Milan’s hopes of a comeback. A selfless centre-forward display ensured he set up Lautaro Martinez for the only goal of the game and as Inter extended their aggregate lead to three the Champions League final dream became reality.

Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

65 mins: Pierre Kalulu comes on to replace Malick Thiaw now. It’s a like-for-like switch with the defender slotting straight into the back line.

Still no joy in the attacking third for Milan.

Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

63 mins: Malick Thiaw seems to have tweaked something in his hamstring. He gets a rub down and shuffles off the pitch with the physios. The defender will play on for now though.

Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

57 mins: Malick Thiaw clatters into Edin Dzeko and earns himself the first yellow card of the game. Milan need to get themselves on the ball and put some pressure on Inter.

It’s all too easy at the minute for the hosts.

Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

54 mins: Messias takes the ball awau from Calhanoglu who goes down in a heap and wins Inter a free kick. Milan are once again annoyed at the decision as Messias was on a breakaway.

This frustration will boil over eventually.

Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

48 mins: Inter have had their fair share on moments to score tonight too. They’re starting to take control of the game by maintaining possession and making Milan chase them around the pitch.

Second half: Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

Milan restart the second half knowing they need to create something special to get themselves back in this contest. Neither manager has made a change at the break.

HT Inter 0-0 Milan (2-0 agg)

In Champions League history, only one team has won the first leg of the semi-final by two or more goals and then failed to progress, with Barcelona failing to go through against Liverpool in 2018/19.

A tie in which Milan’s Divock Origi scored the winning goal.
