Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of the European Championship. Holders Spain must see off Antonio Conte’s Italy if they are to continue their title defence.

Vicente del Bosque’s men have enjoyed mixed fortunes thus far with the defeat to Croatia on the final day in Group D proving to a stain on an otherwise routine summer.

Italy, meanwhile, also suffered a frustrating end to their group campaign, losing to the Republic of Ireland, but will be confident of upsetting the Spanish and progressing to the last eight.
