Match Preview: Liverpool vs Man City on 3/10/2021

Kevin De Bruyne cancelled out Mohamed Salah’s stunning strike as Manchester City twice hit back to draw 2-2 at Anfield in a tie befitting two of the Premier League’s heavyweights.

A game which Pep Guardiola’s side had bossed in the first half exploded into life after the break with the stand-out moment being Salah’s weaving effort, of which Lionel Messi would have been proud.

The Egypt international twisted and turned past Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias before firing an angled right-footed shot inside the far post for his ninth goal in as many matches.

But Manchester City were left fuming that moments earlier James Milner, who was involved in the build-up, had not been shown a second yellow card for what appeared to be a blatant foul on Bernardo Silva.

Only Burnley have kept Salah out this season but as good as his goal was it was not enough to secure the three points which would have taken his team back to the top of the table as Kevin De Bruyne struck with nine minutes remaining as an absorbing encounter fittingly finished honours even.

87 mins: What a tackle! It looked a certain goal for Liverpool after a free kick from wide fell to Fabinho at the back post. Ederson was out of his goal but Rodri got across to slide in and block the tap-in. A goal-saving challenge.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City (DE BRUYNE 81’)

WHAT A GAME! Out of nowhere, City are level. Foden pulls the ball back after a run down the left and Robertson cuts out Walker’s shot. It breaks to De Bruyne, who curls a shot with his left foot that deflects off Matip past Alisson.

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Manchester City (SALAH 76’)

WHAT A GOAL! It’s stunning, absolutely stunning. Salah picks up the ball on the corner of the box before turning Cancelo, cutting inside Laporte and firing a fierce shot across Ederson with his right foot. It’s an unbelievable dribble and a sensational finish - one of his best ever goals.

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City

72 mins: James Milner should really be off here. Another brilliant run from Bernardo is brought to an end by Milner’s outstretched leg. Milner is somehow not shown a yellow card and Guardiola is absolutely furious.

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City

71 mins: Salah passes the ball inside to Firmino, who stands up his defender in the box. But Bernardo does well to work back and nip the ball away before drawing the foul.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City (FODEN 69’)

69 mins: It’s brilliant from Phil Foden! Jesus creates it after drifting inside from the right and working the space for Foden on the left. The angle was tight but Foden buried the ball into the far corner with a stunning finish across Alisson and into the far corner.

We’re level with 20 minutes to go.
