Luton a dangerous opponent - Guardiola

Manchester City ended their four match run without a win as they edged past Luton Town 2-1 at Kenilworth Road in a contest that threatened to end in another negative result for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Without Erling Haaland in the squad, the visitors struggled to capitalise on their possession the first half and, aided by some fine saves from Thomas Kaminski, Lutin kept them at bay. Elijah Adebayo leapt above everyone else to nod home the opener just before the half-time break and Luton took the lead.

In the second half, Man City picked up where they left off and pushes the Hatters deep. Bernardo Silva curled in a superb left-footed strike just after the hour mark to equalise before Jack Grealish slotted home to decisive goal to secure the points for the champions.

Alessia Russo leads statement WSL thrashing as Arsenal tear Chelsea apart

Over in the Women’s Super League, these are the days Alessia Russo joined Arsenal for. In front of a new Women’s Super League record crowd of 59,042, the England striker’s double handed champions Chelsea their first defeat of the season and sparked the title race into life. It was a statement win for Arsenal and a momentous afternoon for Russo, following her transfer from Manchester United this summer. Perhaps now the power shift that move represented is starting to unfold, as Arsenal tore through Chelsea to race away with a crucial victory in a breathless, high-speed clash.

The Blues may still be three points ahead in the table but Arsenal, level in second with Manchester City, are coming for them. Russo’s sublime finish before half-time was the moment the Gunners began to ease clear and after a slow start to the season, Jonas Eidevall’s side have now won seven in a row. As Russo added to Amanda Ilestedt’s first-half header and Beth Mead’s composed finish, Arsenal flexed their strength and handed the champions their first league defeat since March. Russo’s late penalty to make it 4-1 also represented Chelsea’s heaviest WSL defeat since 2018.

HT Luton 1-0 Man City

Manchester City had 70% possession and 10 shots in the first half with three on target - all of which were kept out by goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

Luton in contrast had two shots, both on target, and they scored one.

Half-time! Luton 1-0 Man City

45+2 mins: A huge goal takes Luton into the break with a slender lead.

The Premier League champions really seem to be missing the goal threat of Erling Haaland and despite a few good saves from Thomas Kaminski haven’t created the chances their possession and intent should have brought.

Game on.

GOAL! Luton 1-0 Man City (Adebayo, 45+2’)⚽️

45+2 mins: Incredible! Andros Townsend is fed the ball over on the right wing. He’s got time to cut onto his left foot and lift a cross into the box.

Elijah Adebayo is on hand to meet the ball in the air and he nods it home. Luton take the lead!

Luton 0-0 Man City

41 mins: Manchester City have taken a lot of shots and have increased the pressure on Luton but the home side haven’t flinched.

They are increasingly making Kenilworth Road a difficult place for teams to come to and win which should hold them in good stead as the season goes on.

Can they make it to half-time on level terms?

38 mins: Andros Townsend manages to get forward in a rare attack for Luton before whipping a cross straight into the arms of Ederson.

The hosts will be pleased with their showing so far.
