The first half may have seen Man City 2-1 up, thanks to a brace from Kevin De Bruyne and a goal from Jadon Sancho, but it was a fairly even contest with Cristiano Ronaldo's absence throwing a spanner in the works for the hosts.

But the second half was a completely different story with City dominating their rivals. City had 92% of possession in a 15 minute period and the introductions of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford had little to no impact for Ralf Rangnick's team.

Riyad Mahrez was the star of the second 45, scoring two. The first was a screamer as he converted from a corner to put the visitors out of sight and he got his second in the dying moments of the match after a VAR check.

The match started with a promising performance from United but it turned out to be a shocking and at some points embarrassing for the visitors. The loss means they are outside of the top four after Arsenal defeated Watford earlier today and City have put their six-point cushion at the top of the table back in place.

Liverpool will fancy their chances of knocking them off the top but if City continue with this form they'll be the ones lifting the trophy this season.

Man City vs Man Utd: Cristiano Ronaldo not a ‘big loss’ for Manchester United in derby, claims Gary Neville

Gary Neville maintains Cristiano Ronaldo would not be a “big loss” for Manchester United if he misses the derby against Manchester City.

Speculation has suggested the Portuguese will miss the match at the Etihad Stadium through injury.

But Neville insists the 37-year-old’s profile and the style of play United will likely play against Pep Guardiola’s champions could mean his absence is not a significant blow to their chances.

Man City vs Man Utd: Head-to-head

The respective away side has won seven of the last nine Manchester derbies in all competitions, with the only home victory in this sequence being Manchester United’s 2-0 win in March 2020.

This will be the 50th Premier League meeting between the clubs. There have been 21 away wins, more than any other fixture in the competition’s history.

Man City are looking to complete the league double over United for the second time under manager Pep Guardiola, having also done so in 2018-19.

The Red Devils are vying to win four consecutive league and cup away games against City for the first time since a four-match streak between 1993 and 2000.
