Newcastle vs Chelsea LIVE: Latest result and reaction as hosts reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Enzo Maresca’s side travel to the north east looking to continue their good recent form
Newcastle United struck twice in three first-half minutes to beat Chelsea and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This was the second meeting between the clubs in just a few days and the hosts gained a measure of revenge for their Premier League defeat.
While visiting boss Enzo Maresca opted for heavy rotation, Eddie Howe named a strong Newcastle side, and was rewarded with a strong performance. Alexander Isak first capitalised on an error in possession from Chelsea deep in their own half, before Axel Disasi clumsily turned through his own net after his teammates fell asleep to let Isak latch on to a quickly-taken free kick.
It continues Newcastle’s pursuit of their first major domestic silverware since 1955, while Maresca’s alternative goals were perhaps illustrated by his decision to use just a single substitution, with Cole Palmer among those left on the bench. The host go into the hat for the quarter-finals.

Sean Longstaff backtracks well to cut out an Axel Disasi pass bound for Christopher Nkunku. The midfielder then cannily uses Disasi’s toe to convert a corner into a goal kick.

Filip Jorgensen is all over the place in possession. He passes almost straight to a pressing Sandro Tonali on the edge of the Chelsea box. His defence just about regathers itself to ensure their goalkeeper’s latest error goes unpunished. This has been a mightily shaky start from the summer signing.

Renato Veiga shows some of Chelsea’s frustration, barging into Alexander Isak a second or so after the striker had completed his pass. Up lumber the Newcastle centre-halves.
Lewis Hall whips the free kick to the far post, but it’s too deep, taking a hop off the bleached head of Joelinton and out of play on the far side.

A superb block! Lloyd Kelly is there in the nick of time to deny Joao Felix after the rest of the Newcastle defensive unit lose track of the Portuguese.

Chelsea are rattled. Christopher Nkunku very nearly makes the same mistake from the next free kick, showing his recovery speed to scramble back in time having let Alexander Isak escape once more.

Another soft, soft goal for Chelsea to concede in a nightmare three minutes! First, they leave Alexander Isak all alone from a free kick, switching off and allowing the striker to saunter down the left. His deflected cross should still be dealt with, but Joe Willock gets his head to it and Axel Disasi can’t sort his feet out, turning into his own net.

It’s a horrible moment for the visitors. They pop the ball around on the edge of the area without due care and attention, Renato Veiga given a hospital pass. Joelinton hurries him and sends the ball spinning free, allowing Sandro Tonali to slide in and set up his Swedish striker. Isak finds the bottom corner with typical aplomb.
