Newcastle United vs Everton
Despite losing 1-0 at home to Everton on the Premier League's final day, assistance from elsewhere means fifth-placed Newcastle have snuck into the last Champions League place. It was admittedly a frustrating day at St James' Park, as Pickford stood strong in the first half to deny Tonali and Isak with a double save. He continued his personal highlight reel with a fine pair of stops against Botman, before Pope made his first real save just before the interval from Alcaraz. Following that attempt and the break, Everton's only goal of the afternoon came as a real surprise. With a header that eventually helped the Toffees exceed their 0.90 xG, Alcaraz directed a brilliant Mykolenko cross into the bottom-right corner with the Newcastle number one rooted. Tensions continued to mount as Pickford remained unbeaten, despite facing four big chances for the Toon as they eventually underperformed a 1.27 xG. However, pressure thinned as news seeped through that Manchester United had put two past 10-man Aston Villa, keeping them in the Europa League spot. As said, Newcastle qualify for the Champions League as the final team in the top five, while this win keeps Everton in 13th. Thank you for joining us today, goodbye!
