United first leg collapse "unacceptable" says Ten Hag

Manchester United were knocked out of the Europa League by a rampant Sevilla who showed once again why they have won this tournament a record six times.

United were nervous all night and an early mistake from David De Gea and Harry Maguire gave the hosts the lead after just eight minutes. Youssef En-Nesyri pressing high to win the ball and tap it past the goalkeeper.

Lucas Ocampos believed he had added a second just before the break but a close VAR call ruled his strike out for offside. Sevilla didn’t need long after the restart tp score though. A corner ball came to Loic Bade who shouldered an effort over the head of De Gea to give the hosts a firm grip on the match.

Things got worse for United’s goalkeeper when, late in the game, he stormed out of his box, miscontrolled the ball and gave En-Nesyri an open goal to secure the win and a spot in the semi-finals.

57 mins: Casemiro is booked. He dangles a leg in on Nemanja Gudelj as the midfielder storms through the middle of the pitch. Gudelj hits the deck but there’s no contact from Casemiro.

The referee awards the free kick anyway and Casemiro complains heavily. His yellow card comes for dissent more than anything else.

55 mins: Anthony Martial is limping around, he’s probably injured again. Erik ten Hag wastes no time replacing him as Wout Weghorst comes on just before the visitors send in a corner.

Yassine Bounou deals with the set piece well.

53 mins: Chance! Sevilla should be three up!

Another corner gets swung into the middle where En-Nesyri wins the header. His effort is blocked by Luke Shaw but the rebound falls to Lucas Ocampos who prods it at goal and somehow United scramble it clear.

How has that not gone in?

Sevilla 2-0 Man Utd (4-2 agg)

51 mins: Man Utd will believe that if they score one they’ll be able to score a second. Sevilla will get nervous if United can cut the gap.

Sevilla have just picked up where they left off in the first half though. These opening minutes of the second 45 belong to them as well.

Second half: Sevilla 1-0 Man Utd (3-2 agg)

Erik ten Hag makes a couple of changes at the break. Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford come on to replace Jadon Sancho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Will those substitutions help out the visitors?

Sevilla are just 45 minutes away from a place in the Europa League semi-finals. Based on the first 45 minutes they won’t be worried about conceding either, Man Utd were woeful.

A big turnaround is needed from the visitors.

Harry Maguire or David De Gea? Fault for calamitous Sevilla goal divides opinion

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was involved in another calamitous moment against Sevilla as the Premier League side went behind in their Europa League quarter-final, but the England international was quickly defended by Gary Neville and Robbie Savage - who said David De Gea was to blame.

After scoring a late own goal in last week’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, Maguire was again at fault as United conceded the opening goal inside the first 10 minutes of the second leg at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

After receiving a pass from goalkeeper De Gea just outside the box, Maguire was quickly swarmed by three Sevilla attackers, with the former Tottenham forward Erik Lamela winning the ball back on the edge. It was then fed to striker Youssef En-Nesyri, who finished past De Gea to put Sevilla ahead in the tie.

Maguire initially looked to be at fault, but former United captain Neville argued the defender should never have been passed the ball from De Gea. He tweeted: “Maguire will get battered but that pass from DeGea I wouldn’t like!”

It was a difficult 45 minutes for Manchester United. Erik ten Hag needs to give them a good talking to during this break or else the Red Devils are getting knocked out of the Europa League.
