Cheltenham Gold Cup preview from The Independent's racing correspondent Sam Turner

Galopin Des Champs was denied a historic third successive Cheltenham Gold Cup as Inothewayurthinkin triumphed in the race of the week.

With history on the line, Galopin Des Champs, Paul Townend and Willie Mullins were denied by a sensational ride as jockey Mark Walsh marshalled the Gavin Patrick Cromwell-trained seven-year-old to an emphatic win.

“I'm dancing inside,” said Walsh. “I can't believe it. He jumped well, just missed the ditch. Paul [Townend on Galopin Des Champs] was on my outside and early on, he missed a few fences and I just thought he wasn't happy. This boy [Inothewayurthinkin] has had to grow up over the last year. Gavin Cromwell is a genius having him spot on for today. I'm delighted.”

On a day of upsets with plenty of other fascinating contests, the 100/1 shot Poniros pulled off the biggest shock of the week by winning the JCB Triumph Hurdle in the opening race of the day, while the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle saw another Mullins-Townend triumph with Jasmin De Vaux taking victory.

Cheltenham Gold Cup tips

It’s a clean sweep from our experts when tipping up this Gold Cup...

Ruby Walsh’s tip (via Paddy Power): Galopin Des Champs (8/15)

“I hope Galopin Des Champs wins as he’s an incredible horse. Inothewayurthinkin is the danger to him as he’s guaranteed to stay and he’ll come home well. Galopin Des Champs should win as he should have far too many gears for the rest of these. A forecast of Galopin Des Champs to beat Inothewayurthinkin could be an extra value pick.”

Sam Turner’s tip: Galopin Des Champs (8/15)

“A week ago, the prospect of a soft surface and a real test at the trip looked to be perfect conditions for Galopin Des Champs to complete an historic hat-trick in the blue riband event. However, a dry forecast and the likelihood of spring ground have enhanced the chances of King George hero Banbridge seeing out today’s trip, while the supplemented Inothewayurthinkin, seven lengths behind Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown, has added further depth to a race which looked a little thin on competition a fortnight ago.

“The reigning champion should still have too much class for this field as he is so tactically versatile and jumps brilliantly in the main, although after some of the high- profile jumping failures this week, nothing is taken for granted. The best outsiders look to be Ahoy Senior, who is reported in good shape following a wind operation, and The Real Whacker who wasn’t disgraced behind Banbridge on Boxing Day at Kempton. Backing them each-way in the markets without the favourite could be the way to go.”

Oli Bell’s tip (via Sky Bet:) Galopin Des Champs (8/15)

“Friday at Cheltenham, Gold Cup Day, the blue ribbon of the week where Galopin Des Champs is hoping to make history and win three Gold Cups. I think he’ll do it – I love the horse, and I think he deserves his place in the pantheon of Cheltenham greats.”

Galopin Des Champs poised and primed for next act of Cheltenham glory

What does it mean to make history? To achieve such accomplishments in a lifetime that others are compelled to scribe down your achievements so that future generations know how extraordinary you were.

Most of us don’t come close to such recognition but for a select few there are moments when history comes knocking, when expectation weighs heavily on the shoulders and the spotlight of legacy shines firmly on them. This is the fate that awaits jockey Paul Townend and Galopin Des Champs at the Cheltenham Festival this week.

Should he and jockey Paul Townend win the Gold Cup they’ll become only the second duo this century to lift it three times in a row

Cheltenham Gold Cup

Right, it’s time to focus on the big race of the week - the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is around 20 minutes away.

Galopin Des Champs going for history with a third straight Gold Cup triumph. He’s be just the fifth horse in history to manage that.

Willie Mullins has had 10 winners this week, equalling his own Cheltenham record, and how fitting would it be if Galopin des Champs broke that record...
