Cheltenham Gold Cup preview from The Independent's racing correspondent Sam Turner

Galopin Des Champs was denied a historic third successive Cheltenham Gold Cup as Inothewayurthinkin triumphed in the race of the week.

With history on the line, Galopin Des Champs, Paul Townend and Willie Mullins were denied by a sensational ride as jockey Mark Walsh marshalled the Gavin Patrick Cromwell-trained seven-year-old to an emphatic win.

“I'm dancing inside,” said Walsh. “I can't believe it. He jumped well, just missed the ditch. Paul [Townend on Galopin Des Champs] was on my outside and early on, he missed a few fences and I just thought he wasn't happy. This boy [Inothewayurthinkin] has had to grow up over the last year. Gavin Cromwell is a genius having him spot on for today. I'm delighted.”

On a day of upsets with plenty of other fascinating contests, the 100/1 shot Poniros pulled off the biggest shock of the week by winning the JCB Triumph Hurdle in the opening race of the day, while the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle saw another Mullins-Townend triumph with Jasmin De Vaux taking victory.

Jasmin De Vaux wins the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

The Mullins-Townend dup proving unstoppable this week. Does that bode well for Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup?

Victory for them with Jasmin De Vaux, who won the Bumper previously at Cheltenham. A two-time winner at the Festival. No mean feat.

Winner) Jasmin De Vaux (6/1), 2) The Big Westerner (9/2F), 3) Derryhassen Paddy (10/1), 4) Yellow Card (33/1)

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle result

Jasmin De Vaux is too strong, holding off The Big Westerner down the home straight and Jasmin De Vaux wins the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle by a couple of lengths.

Another win for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend! The Big Westerner second, with Derryhassen Paddy edging a photo finish for third

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Here comes Jasmin De Vaux down the near rail and The Big Westerner makes her move as well.

Two-horse race as they clear the last

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Same leaders as we go over the second last. Jasmin De Vaux now making good ground through the field for Willie Mullins.

The Big Westerner looks boxed in here

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Jax Junior and Intense Approach also going well here but it’s still Wingmen and Derryhassen Paddy up front. The likes of Argento Boy, with Rachael Blackmore aboard, well placed.

They’re really tightly bunched as we go over the third last. This is anyone’s race

Luke Baker14 March 2025 15:25

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

No fallers yet, with six fences to go.

Wingmen and Derryhassen Paddy have about a two-length lead over the rest of the field but long way still to go

Luke Baker14 March 2025 15:24

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Favourite The Big Westerner in midfield early on as they’re pretty well bunched. Wingmen and Derryhassen Paddy the leaders as the pace is decent

Luke Baker14 March 2025 15:23

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

And we’re off in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle! A maximum 20-strong field going in this one.

We’re away first time - the starts have been much better after yesterday’s debacle

Luke Baker14 March 2025 15:21

3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Will it be yet another Willie Mullins win, with Jasmin De Vaux the best bet? But Jet Blue’s odds are coming well in - he’s almost level with The Big Westerner as joint favourite.

James Reveley is aboard Jet Blue, who is trained by David Cottin. The unbeaten Derryhassen Paddy also a chance
