Wales continued their winning start to the 2022 Women’s Six Nations, producing another fine fightback to snatch a late victory against Scotland in Cardiff.

In front of a record crowd for a women’s international in Wales, replacement scrum-half Ffion Lewis capitalised on a break from the outstanding Alisha Butchers to cross for the winning try less than five minutes from time.

Scotland had dominated the first half, but were again guilty of failing to convert their territory and possession into points, leading only 14-7 at the interval.

Rhona Lloyd’s second score soon after the restart had appeared to set the visitors up for a second half surge, but the Welsh bench again made a telling impact.

Tries from Sioned Harries and Kelsey Jones levelled proceedings, before Butchers’ burst teed up Lewis to secure a second successive bonus point victory and a first home Six Nations win since 2019.

Changes for both sides - Scotland are required to bring on a qualified front rower, with late call-up Anne Young on at loosehead, and captain Rachel Malcolm perhaps a surprising sacrifice.

Last week’s super sub Donna Rose replaces Cerys Hale at tighthead for Wales. Her first involvement isn’t the best, over-excited and driving too soon against a Scottish scrum containing only seven players.

The home crowd are enjoying this! A delectable kick from Elinor Snowsill is weighted beautifully for Lisa Neumann, who takes at a canter. She swerves inwards to make more inroads into the Scottish half.

Not quite! A pass fails to find safe hands and Wales knock-on.

TRY! WALES 19-19 Scotland (Kelsey Jones try, 64 minutes)

A meaty Welsh drive and Kelsey Jones is the buried beneficiary! Smart thinking from Wales, going to the maul against a Scotland pack shorn of a body, and after Jones hits her jumper and hurries to the back, the locomotive gets chugging.

Jones survives the tackle of Megan Gaffney arriving from the side and over the replacement hooker goes. Elinor Snowsill takes over kicking duties but fails to find the mark. It’s all tied up in Cardiff!

Oof, that is some shove from Wales! Scotland are very nearly driven right back over their own line, and a few fans are confused by the sharp blast of referee Joy Neville’s whistle - but the arm is not quite fully upright. Just a penalty...

And to little surprise, Siwan Lillicrap indicates that she wants the scrum.

It’s in kicking range but there is no thought of anything but a punt for the corner from Elinor Snowsill. Wales fancy a third try...

Strong defence from Scotland! Wales try a move at the front of a feigned maul, with Siwan Lillicrap rounding but finding unexpected resistance on the blindside. The number eight cleverly releases the ball into Scottish hands to ensure it will be another Welsh lineout.
